In the Whale, a punk rock duo from Denver, Colorado, performed at the Black Cat on Sunday night as the opening act for the Electric Six. They played loud and fast, and they left a good impression on folks who turned up for the main act.

Nate Valdez on lead vocals and guitar and Eric Riley on drums and vocals performed well together as they thundered through 11 songs, including selections from the band’s extended plays in a 45-minute set that was consistently boisterous, bordering on hardcore. In the Whale have been recording since 2012, and they don’t appear to have released a debut full-length yet, but surely they will soon.

Meanwhile, In the Whale are set to release a new EP, Quicksand, which includes songs like “L.A.” and “Medicate,” both performed Sunday night, on Oct. 21.
