Alt-rockers Violent Femmes wrapped a tour with Echo and the Bunnymen on July 25 at The Anthem in a bid for biggest show of the summer dominance! From the looks of things, they succeeded. Judge for yourself with these pictures of the Violent Femmes by Jason Nicholson, who shot the show.
The 2018 tour followed a shorter 2017 stint where the Violent Femmes teamed up with Echo and the Bunnymen. Prior to the 2017 tour, the Violent Femmes released a 25-track live album, 2 Mics & The Truth: Unplugged & Unhinged in America.
Bassist and founding member Brian Ritchie said of the live album, “This is the first time we’ve delivered a full scale recording to the public which captures the sound and spirit of the band the way we play together when we’re working out songs in the hotel or dressing room. This project refocuses attention upon the repertoire as a whole by stripping songs to their essentials, conveying them without artifice, and removing them from any timeline.”
At The Anthem, Brian was joined by vocalist and guitarist Gordon Gano, of course, as well as new drummer John Sparrow. The gents rocked through songs you would want to hear like “Blister in the Sun,” “Kiss Off,” and “Add It Up” from their self-titled debut album. Midset, they acknowledged their latest record, We Can Do Anything, with a performance of “Memory” from the 2016 release.
