Last fall, Dan Tyminski, who often goes by simply his last name, released Southern Gothic via Mercury Records Nashville. He’s on tour now, and he performs at Pearl Street Warehouse on Friday, Aug. 31.

Explaining inspirations for Southern Gothic, Dan said, “I feel that the light and dark in this record are truly my journey, my personal journey in life. I think we all feel that whisper from each side of your shoulder, someone saying, ‘yeah do it,’ or ‘no don’t do it.’ I have an enormous struggle with that in my life, but it’s something that I’m aware of. I try to make sure that I understand what the right voice is. I don’t make quick decisions because light and dark, in my opinion, can often look very similar.”

As a vocalist, Dan is a prolific collaborator. He’s been a member of Alison Krauss’ Union Station for 25 years. He also was the singing voice for George Clooney in O Brother, Where Art Thou? (which won him two Grammys, including Best Country Collaboration with Vocals for the single “I Am A Man of Constant Sorrow” and Album of the Year for the soundtrack).

In 2014, Dan sang on Avicii’s international pop hit “Hey Brother,” which went #1 in at least 18 countries. After working with Avicii, Dan was the inspired to record again as a solo artist, and he melded country and electronica to produce Souther Gothic.
