The devil went down to Georgia, but a sweet angel came to Alexandria from Atlanta recently in the form of singer-songwriter Carly Burruss.

Carly is currently touring with Kasey Chambers and provided a warm and energized opening set at The Birchmere on Tuesday.

Prior to the current tour with Kasey Chanbers, Carly has appeared onstage with Lee Ann Womack, Dwight Yoakam, Keith Urban, Ellie Holcomb, Old 97’s, The Band of Heathens, Sam Bush, and Will Hoge. She released her debut album in 2017 — a self-titled EP containing songs about stubborn joy, female independence, strong faith, and big hair.

On her website, Carly’s music is described as, “sassy but sweet,” and, “a taste of old-school country with wit, humor and grit.” Her Birchmere set covered all bases of that statement, mixing covers like Johnny Cash’s gritty “Folsom Prison Blues” with original songs like “Higher the Hair” — a humorous tune about rushing a woman to the beauty shop to save her from having a flat head of hair (because the higher the hair the closer to Jesus).

Carly closed her set with “Ain’t Trying to Please,” which she explained was inspired by an ex-lover. After all, no self-respecting country music star goes on tour without a song about a relationship gone bad.

With the help of a Kickstarter crowdfunding campaign, Carly is working on her second album. You can find information on her Kickstarter.
