Finnish rockers Apocalyptica are four guys with cellos who are playing the music of Metallica — yes, on cellos — at the Lincoln Theatre on Tuesday, May 28.

Apocalyptica is currently on the APOCALYPTICA PLAYS Metallica By Four Cellos Tour. In 1996, the band released its debut album, Plays Metallica by Four Cellos. Apocalyptica released a live version of the album last year, and the record lends its name to the current tour.

In 2016, Eicca Toppinen, a member of Apocalyptica, told the New York Times that once there were not many artists seriously combining music styles. But now “there seem to be tons of artists and projects” that fall into the classical crossover category, where for example Apocalyptica might play metal songs with classical instrumentation. “I think the big reason for that is the pioneers showed people that you can play different styles with different instruments,” Eicca said, “and that encouraged many young classical players to feel more free with what they wanted to play.”

In a review for AllMusic, Eduardo Rivadavia said Apocalyptica understandably may concentrate on recent hits by Metallica but really scores when tackling the earlier, more complex compositions.

“The quartet’s love and understanding of the music is the real key here, and their attention to detail and technically flawless performance will no doubt satisfy even the most skeptical of fans,” Eduardo wrote.
