Houston hip-hop legend Scarface’s Alive and Well Farewell Tour made its DC stop last week at a sold-out Howard Theatre to tear down the venue one last time. Performing along side his band Formaldehyde Funk, the night was a celebration of Scarface’s 34-year-long career as well as his appreciation for more time. After some recent serious health scares the 51-year-old rapper announced this would be his final tour, although he’s announced retirement in the past.

Since receiving a kidney transplant, donated from his son Christopher, Brother Face’s health has greatly improved health and it showed as he and the band jammed throughout the night at the Howard Theatre on Aug. 3. They performed songs from every part of Scarface’s career, from Geto Boy hits like “Mind Playing Tricks on Me,” to early solo records like “Money and the Power” before moving into classics like “I Seen a Man Die,” “Guess Who’s Back,” and his biggest feature record, “Smile.” They even performed a cover of “Voyage to Atlantis” with Face on guitar.

He went on to pay respect to the city he called his second home by bringing out Big G and some other member of Backyard Band to help him perform a Go-go version of his biggest hit record “On My Block.”

The jam session went on as smoke filled the room but Scarface made sure to take time out to pay his respects to his fallen friends, DJ Screw and fellow Geto Boys member Bushwhick Bill, before celebrating his son Christopher — bringing him out on stage and thanking him for saving his life. Face reminded everyone in the building to appreciate each and every moment they have on this earth and to live life to the fullest.

Scarface’s classic album, The Fix, had its 20th anniversary last week. Listen to it on Spotify:

The night ended with Face signing autographs and handing the mic to a fan in the front of the crowd to freestyle after several technical difficulties ended up cutting his set short, but before leaving the stage he promised to come back again and make things right. So I guess it isn’t farewell after all.

Scarface’s Alive and Well Tour has a few more stops but wraps up on Aug. 27 in his home state of Texas. Be sure to catch while you still have the opportunity.
