Live Review: Arlo Parks w/ Chloe George @ 9:30 Club — 3/22/24

English singer-songwriter Arlo Parks is back in DC better than ever — with her sophomore album, a new poetry book, and a handful of impressive song collaborations on her resume since her debut concert in The District in 2021. And at her show on March 22 at a sold-out 9:30 Club, she told the audience how much of a better place she is in since her last visit to DC and how she wants everyone in the audience to know they are loved and safe at her shows.

Parks is on tour promoting her second record, My Soft Machine, which came out just under a year ago. The record features a soft vibe that blends indie pop, folk, and R&B with her poetic, elegant lyrics. It’s no surprise, though, considering she just released her debut poetry book, The Magic Border: Poetry and Fragments from My Soft Machine. Whether her words are on stage or bound in a book, they are impactful.

Early last week, the Library of Congress honored Elton John and Bernie Taupin with the Gershwin Award. Part of the ceremony was an all-star concert with performances by Joni Mitchell, Annie Lennox, Garth Brooks, Metallica, and Brandi Carlile.

So while she was in town, Brandi decided it would be cool to do a show at The Anthem as well! It was such a good idea that they had to add a second show!

Playing in Washington DC is a special occasion and a sign of achievement for bands originating outside of the U.S.

Often, a night in the nation’s capital with acts from overseas amounts to an unforgettable experience for fans from the region who might not have the chance to see them otherwise.

Bombay Bicycle Club, an indie rock project out of England, is currently on an ambitious multi-leg tour, one that saw it play the southeast, northeast and even cities in Canada before ending the current segment in DC the night of March 21 at a venue they hold dear: 9:30 Club.

A hometown hero show through and through, it’s always amazing to see Harkum and other local talents making it to bigger and better things. On Joey’s album release tour, we were all ready to sing along to new and old songs alike.

Live Review: Waterparks w/ Loveless @ 9:30 — 3/18/24

DC is known for many things, but waterparks are not one of them. This week, DC had Waterparks for a very limited time only — on stage at the 9:30 Club, that is.

Live Review: Kurt Vile and The Violators @ Ottobar — 3/17/24

Musicians certainly hope and try to make each show an unforgettable experience for those in attendance, but few of them might be going about it in such industrious fashion as Kurt Vile.

When he tours, the Lansdowne, Pa. native totes with him a vast selection of guitars — plus a single banjo — that he pulls from to offer a different sound and presentation for every single song he plays. It blows the minds of anyone in the room to see him for the first time and still impresses the many longtime followers he’s gained as one of the most prized and influential singer-songwriters and guitarists of the modern era.
