Friko: An Exciting Young Band from Chicago
Words by Mary Hermann

Friko is a dynamic two-person band hailing from Chicago, consisting of Niko Kapetan and Bailey Minzenberger. Both musicians come from families with strong musical backgrounds, which has undoubtedly influenced their talents and creative styles. Their shared experiences and musical heritage contribute to the unique sound they bring to their performances.

With their combined skills and passion for music, Friko recently captivated their audience at 9:30 Club, opening Royel Otis. It’s exciting to see how Friko’s backgrounds shaped their artistry.

Live Review: Cass McCombs @ Ottobar — 9/27/24

Cass McCombs is respected far and wide but shows little interest in celebrity. Save an interview here and there across the 20-plus years he’s been releasing material, he’s kept his private life mostly to himself.

But as veterans of the local music scene know — and as has been brought to light in articles over the years — Charm City served as an important stop on McCombs’ journey.

The Northern California native spent the end of the last century and the start of this one in New York City, but is said to have moved to Maryland the same year he released his first full studio record, 2003’s A.

This lasting connection seemingly makes any date in Baltimore a special occasion for him, and the 46-year-old and his current touring band recently visited Ottobar to connect with longtime fans and present an awesome set of music pulled mostly from his early recordings and featuring additional favorites, too.

Live Review: Hippo Campus @ The Atlantis — 9/25/24

One of the first things lead Hippo Campus singer Jake Luppen had to say to the audience at their recent and intimate Atlantis set was how happy they are to be in such a small space with fans.

“We haven’t played these rooms since we were 21, so it’s so good to be back! We love seeing y’alls faces,” he said early in the set at The Atlantis in DC.

The indie rock band from Minnesota played a sold-out gig promoting their newest record, Flood, as part of a limited string of small shows before a full tour next year. The group consists of members Jake Luppen (vocals, guitar), Nathan Stocker (guitar, vocals), DeCarlo Jackson (trumpet, vocals), and Zach Sutton (bass).

Live Review: Julien Baker w/ Bartees Strange and Katie Malco @ The Atlantis — 9/27/24

You can’t match the intimate energy of a packed small club. And when it’s an artist who has been selling out huge venues both solo and with a supergroup, well, it becomes something special. That’s how we felt at The Atlantis Friday night as Julien Baker took the stage.

On the eve of her performance at the All Things Go Festival, Baker and her band played the intimate club, and it was immediately apparent this was going to be one for the books. Hours before Baker was to start there was a line of fans around the block waiting to get in.

Presiding over one of classic rock’s most beloved catalogues, Jeff Lynne’s victory lap could very well take him to the farthest reaches of our solar system and back.

Fortunately for his longtime fans across the DMV, it brought him to the nation’s capital this past week for what was an unforgettable farewell performance by the project called Jeff Lynne’s ELO.

Giddy concert goers of all ages filed into Capital One Arena in downtown DC to enjoy a long list of Electric Light Orchestra favorites and a truly magnificent night of rock and roll led by the 76-year-old English superstar.

The Birchmere was the ideal venue recently to host instagram singing sensation Stella Cole. If you aren’t familiar with Stella Cole, she began singing on Instagram during the pandemic. Her videos caught fire and have propelled her to over 1.7 million followers across all social media platforms.

What makes her unique is the combination of her age and her chosen genre.

Live Review: Keane @ The Anthem — 9/26/24

Back in 2019, Keane released Cause and Effect, their first album since reuniting after a split in 2013. Then in 2020, the band embarked on a North American tour — and they made the first few West Coast dates before the pandemic canceled shows around the world.

So, making up for lost time, Keane recently returned to DC and pulled out all the stops in an expansive show that reached deep into their catalog and had 6,000 concertgoers dancing in the aisles at The Anthem.

The tagline for Suzanne Vega’s tour promised new songs, old songs, and other songs. In her recent performance at The Birchmere, she delivered all of that along with her charming stories and fine wit.
