La Sera and Springtime Carnivore have both toured through DC recently, and both bands play dreamy, psych-folk songs for meditators and dancers alike. So it seems only natural that the two bands, fronted by Katy Goodman and Greta Morgan respectively, would tour together!

Well, touring they are but they have gone a step further as Katy and Greta are releasing a collaborative record — Take It, It’s Yours — a surprising collection of covers of New Wave and punk tunes on August 26 via Polyvinyl Records.

You can listen to all 10 tracks on Take It, It’s Yours on Soundcloud, including covers ranging from “Pay to Cum” by DC’s own Bad Brains to “Dreaming” by Blondie to “Ever Fallen in Love” by the Buzzcocks (who visit the 9:30 Club themselves in September):

Here’s the full tracklist of this clever collaboration:
1. Over The Edge (Wipers)
2. Pay to Cum (Bad Brains)
3. Bastards of Young (The Replacements)
4. Sex Beat (The Gun Club)
5. Ever Fallen in Love (Buzzcocks)
6. Where Eagles Dare (The Misfits)
7. I Wanna Be Your Dog (The Stooges)
8. In the City (The Jam)
9. Dreaming (Blondie)
10. Rebel Yell (Billy Idol)

The ladies put their own stamp on each of the 10 cover tracks, deconstructing the primal elements of the songs and reassembling them in their own hazy, psychedelic manner, often with a sophisticated twist a bit more subdued than many of the high-BPM originals.

Commenting specifically on the Bad Brains cover, Katy said, “On the surface a song like ‘Pay to Cum’ seems really masculine, but to me, the lyrics are really more about freedom. You have the right to sing, you have the right to dance. When you have two girls harmonizing on these songs, they take on a new meaning, because you’re listening in a different way.”

La Sera and Springtime Carnivore visit DC together to perform at Songbyrd Music House on Thursday, Oct. 20. I strongly recommend this show, not just for the joy of these cover tunes, but also given that Songbyrd is a crazy intimate space to catch two really strong bands together! (They are playing much larger venues elsewhere on this tour.)

Parklife DC caught a great show by La Sera when they performed at the 9:30 Club on May 12, 2016, and we have a few photos of Katy and her band that we haven’t previously shared. Here are some pictures of La Sera performing the 9:30 Club in May.
