Eclectic might be the best way to describe the Hot Club of Cowtown and their recent set at Jammin’ Java. The trio played a mix of covers ranging from traditional folk (the Scottish “Loch Lomond”) to jazz classics (Ella Fitzgerald’s “Exactly Like You”), Western swing (Bob Wills’s “My Confession”), and country tunes (Merle Travis’s “Kentucky Means Paradise”), in addition to their original songs.

Matt Maltese recently entered the Howard Theatre stage sheepishly, yet when the Reading-raised singer-songwriter opened his mouth, everyone listened.

Live Review: Dave Stewart and Eurythmics Songbook @ EagleBank Arena — 3/13/24

Dave Stewart, the splendid Englishman who shot to fame as half of the synthpop duo Eurythmics, has a great ear for music, and he has applied that strength to fashion a decades-long career as a powerhouse producer in America.

But that keen ear for music was very much on display in a welcome return to the stage for Dave, who recently toured the songs of the Eurythmics as opener for Bryan Adams. Dave recruited a stunning band of female musicians, each of whom brought their own sonic strengths to the ensemble, to explore 11 superb Eurythmics songs in concert when the tour arrived for a DC-area show at EagleBank Arena.

Live Review: Arlo Parks w/ Chloe George @ 9:30 Club — 3/22/24

English singer-songwriter Arlo Parks is back in DC better than ever — with her sophomore album, a new poetry book, and a handful of impressive song collaborations on her resume since her debut concert in The District in 2021. And at her show on March 22 at a sold-out 9:30 Club, she told the audience how much of a better place she is in since her last visit to DC and how she wants everyone in the audience to know they are loved and safe at her shows.

Parks is on tour promoting her second record, My Soft Machine, which came out just under a year ago. The record features a soft vibe that blends indie pop, folk, and R&B with her poetic, elegant lyrics. It’s no surprise, though, considering she just released her debut poetry book, The Magic Border: Poetry and Fragments from My Soft Machine. Whether her words are on stage or bound in a book, they are impactful.

Early last week, the Library of Congress honored Elton John and Bernie Taupin with the Gershwin Award. Part of the ceremony was an all-star concert with performances by Joni Mitchell, Annie Lennox, Garth Brooks, Metallica, and Brandi Carlile.

So while she was in town, Brandi decided it would be cool to do a show at The Anthem as well! It was such a good idea that they had to add a second show!

Playing in Washington DC is a special occasion and a sign of achievement for bands originating outside of the U.S.

Often, a night in the nation’s capital with acts from overseas amounts to an unforgettable experience for fans from the region who might not have the chance to see them otherwise.

Bombay Bicycle Club, an indie rock project out of England, is currently on an ambitious multi-leg tour, one that saw it play the southeast, northeast and even cities in Canada before ending the current segment in DC the night of March 21 at a venue they hold dear: 9:30 Club.

Brazilian new wave band Cansei de Ser Sexy — or CSS — released four albums from 2005 to 2013, and then essentially went on hiatus.

Although CSS haven’t recorded new music since then, the band reunites for a USA tour of their extraordinary electroclash catalog, beginning at Black Cat in DC on Friday, May 3.

There’s nothing like family and good music. Joey Harkum’s recent show gave my soul just that at Baltimore Soundstage. A hometown hero show through and through, it’s always amazing to see Harkum and other local talents making it to bigger and better things. On Joey’s album release tour, we were all ready to sing along to new and old songs alike.
