Grammy Award winners Boy George & Culture Club return to the Filene Center at Wolf Trap on Thursday, Sept. 1! And they appear with their hard-charging new wave contemporaries The English Beat!

Few new wave groups were as popular as Culture Club. During the early ’80s, the group racked up seven straight Top 10 hits in the UK, and six Top 10 singles in the USA with their light, infectious pop-soul, including “Do You Really Want to Hurt Me,” “Time (Clock of the Heart),” “I’ll Tumble 4 Ya,” “Church of the Poison Mind,” “Karma Chameleon,” “Miss Me Blind,” and “It’s a Miracle.”

Though their music was radio-ready, what brought the band stardom was Boy George, the group’s charismatic, cross-dressing lead singer. George dressed in flamboyant dresses and wore heavy makeup, creating a disarmingly androgynous appearance that created a sensation on early MTV. George also had a biting wit and frequently came up with cutting quips that won Culture Club heavy media exposure in both America and Britain.

In 2018, Culture Club released Life, which marked Culture Club’s first new album in nearly 20 years.

Meanwhile, consummate showman Dave Wakeling has continued to keep The English Beat alive and strong. How could he not? Dave continues to tour the world as The English Beat with an amazing all-star ska backing band playing all the hits of The Beat, General Public, and his new songs.

Hailing from Birmingham, England, The Beat toured relentlessly and released three studio albums after forming in 1979: I Just Can’t Stop It, Wh’appen, and Special Beat Service. You surely remember all of their timeless hits: “Tears of a Clown,” “Hands Off… She’s Mine,” “Mirror in the Bathroom,” “Save It for Later,” and more!

In 2018, The English Beat also released an amazing new album, Here We Go Love.
