China Forbes, the voice of the international acclaimed Pink Martini, recently delivered a fabulous evening of personal songs at The Birchmere while touring in support of her latest LP, The Road, a collection of songs about a decade-long journey China has been on.

It was a night of beautifully written songs, and elegant music, in which China played and talked predominantly sitting at a piano, while standing to sing some songs, and energizing the crowd through her playfulness and dance on June 5.

This tone allowed for a very intimate night of song, and discussion with the crowd as China talked about divorce, and her journey over the years, while assuring the crowd that Pink Martini was still together. Phil Baker, the Pink Martini bassist, played the show, providing the dynamic bass feel as he provides in Pink Martini. His presence provides a familiar foundation for Forbes on this solo effort as well, which probably helps with the delivery of such personal and intimate songs.

One of the highlights of the evening was the song “Full Circle,” which highlights the beautiful vocals of Forbes. The song gives hope and inspiration to all who listen to the words carefully. China is at her best in this song. Her voice was clear, precise, and easily hit the notes of this meaningful song. The song portrays the emotion of the journey. It is a song that helps put the dynamics of the journey into perspective. The journey is about the good and the bad, and it should be experienced and enjoyed at each of its phases. The inspiration to continue may come from the highs and the lows. The Piano playing is superb on this track.

At The Birchmere, China’s vocal range was on full display throughout the evening and was arguably at its finest was on the song “Beautiful World.”

As the evening was nearing the end, Forbes ensured they got the title track of the new LP into the set, a brilliant song of eclectic piano playing and vocals that helped to consolidate the evening of song, music, and dance. As with the song “Full Circle,” “The Road” also provides further meaning, and inspiration for Forbes’ journey and also encourages the listener to take the journey towards self-fulfillment and to actually enjoy the evolution.

China Forbes is currently on tour around the United States and will be touring again this summer with Pink Martini.
