The Annapolis Baygrass Music Festival is set to return to Sandy Point State Park on Sept. 21-22, 2024, bringing with it a potent mix of top-tier music and environmental stewardship. Now in its second year, this festival is quickly becoming a standout event on the Mid-Atlantic music scene, offering attendees a chance to enjoy world-class bluegrass and Americana while supporting Chesapeake Bay conservation efforts.

This year’s lineup is impressive. Saturday’s headliner, Oteil & Friends, features Oteil Burbridge of Dead & Company fame, joined by an all-star ensemble including Melvin Seals and Steve Kimock. The day’s roster also boasts jamgrass pioneers Leftover Salmon, “King of Newgrass” Sam Bush, and popular acts like Sierra Hull and The Lil Smokies.

Sunday keeps the momentum going with Grammy winners The Infamous Stringdusters taking the headline slot. They’re joined by a diverse array of talents, including the genre-bending Daniel Donato’s Cosmic Country, the all-female powerhouse Big Richard, and the Grateful Dead-inspired Brown Eyed Women. Throughout the weekend, surprise collaborations are likely, thanks to Artists-at-Large Jennifer Hartswick, Natalie Cressman, and Ron Holloway.

But Baygrass is more than just a music festival. It’s a platform for environmental awareness and action. The event’s commitment to sustainability is evident in its practices, from compostable dining ware to a ban on single-use plastics. These efforts serve as a living example of environmental stewardship for attendees.

Education is also a key component of the Baygrass experience. While specific workshop topics aren’t detailed, the festival promises interactive learning experiences alongside the music. Mental health resources are also prominently featured through its partnership with the VA Way and with organizations like the National Alliance on Mental Health on hand to provide information and support.

The festival’s charitable focus is clear, with a portion of the proceeds benefiting local environmental non-profits such as the Watershed Stewards Academy and the Oyster Recovery Partnership. This dedication to local ecology underscores the festival’s connection to its stunning Chesapeake Bay setting.

Festival co-founder Ron Peremel emphasizes the event’s unique blend of entertainment and education: “We’re creating an environment where people can enjoy fantastic music while also engaging with important issues like conservation and mental health.”

As Baygrass enters its sophomore year, it’s clear that the festival has struck a chord with both music lovers and environmentalists. With its diverse lineup, picturesque venue, and commitment to important causes, the Annapolis Baygrass Music Festival is positioning itself as a must-attend event for those seeking great music with a purpose.
