Every year, thousands of diners gather for the world-famous Diner En Blanc, where they wear all white and picnic in a secret location in a major city. This year, in Washington, DC, Diner En Blanc takes place on Aug. 25, and you can sign up for the waiting list to receive an invitation!
Last year, diners filed onto Pennsylvania Avenue to eat beside the US Capital Building! Hardly out of public view, even if no one knew where they were going until they met up with their guide on the day of the meal.
While it is certainly an occasion to be seen, host Linda Davis emphasized the importance of the people involved when she explained the dinner to Parklife DC. “The event is about bringing community together,” she said.
Wait listing for those who are not members began on July 31, and it is currently open. Two more phases will open prior to the dinner on Aug. 25, so there are plenty of opportunities to go. Pay $43 and an additional $9 for membership and support fees, which go toward administration of the large event.
You can pay no more and elect to bring a square folding-table and two white chairs; a white picnic basket and/or bag including a gourmet meal for two; a white tablecloth and cloth-napkins; cutlery, dishware, and glassware; and a garbage bag. You also can buy a prearranged meal ranging from simple charcuterie or a larger meal. You can also rent a table and dishware set-up for $100.
To begin Diner En Blanc DC, 5,000 guests will arrive separately to predesignated places to meet one of 120 table leaders. Each leader has 25 tables or 50 people whom they guide to the ultimate dinner location. Everyone will be seated for dinner by 6pm on Aug. 25, and a DJ will begin around 8pm to provide folks with the opportunity to linger and socialize after the meal — wherever it may be!
