Jonathan Sloane Trio

The Jonathan Sloane Trio took the stage at Hank Dietle’s Tavern in Rockville, Maryland on Thursday, August 31. The cozy venue filled up with eager fans of Sloane’s blues-inspired rock and funk sounds. Jonathan Sloane, the group’s leader and guitarist, formed after establishing himself in the DC music scene.
Originally from Rockville, Sloane is a multi-talented musician, instructor, and lyricist rooted in the blues but expanding across genres like R&B, funk, and soul. On bass was Robbie Cooper, Sloane’s longtime collaborator, adding rhythmic depth and smooth grooves. Rounding out the trio was drummer Deren Blessman, blending seamlessly with his nuanced, powerful playing.
Sloane strapped on his guitar as Cooper grabbed his bass and Blessman, sticks twirling, settled into the drum kit smiling. Sloane greeted the crowd and dove into the first funky blues song of the night. His nimble fingers flew over the frets while Cooper laid down a heavy bass groove, meshing perfectly with Blessman’s precise drum beats. The crowd quickly got into the infectious music, reveling in Sloane’s tone and melodic sense.

The tight-knit trio clearly enjoyed their musical chemistry on stage. They traded grins as they improvised and expanded on both original songs and covers. They also treated the audience to some songs that will be on their new album which they hope will be out in the spring of 2024. Sloane captivated the audience with his lyrical solos and crisp, bright guitar tones. Before we knew it the evening was over. It didn’t seem like it was already 11pm. The Jonathan Sloane Trio’s talent and love of playing shone through. Sloane will be touring with Anders Osborne for most of September. Check out his website for dates and locations.
