The minimalist jam band duo of The Infamous Stringdusters members Andy Falco on guitar and Travis Book on upright bass recently brought Jerry Garcia’s music to life with an intimate, impromptu tribute show at The Hamilton Live in DC. As part of their Falco and Book Play Jerry Garcia Tour, the tie-dye suit wearing twosome played a detailed 15-song setlist of Garcia and Hunter penned Grateful Dead classics that felt like a cozy living room jam session.
Opting for a different song selection from their show at The Hamilton Live last year, Falco and Book delivered renditions of Garcia tunes like “Bertha,” “Franklin’s Tower,” and “Deal” having no pre-planned setlist, allowed them to improvise and channel the spirit of the Dead’s live shows at The Hamilton Live on Oct. 19. The picture of a smiling Garcia watching over them seemed to approve.

Relying on just two instruments — Falco’s nimble guitar work and Book’s steady upright bass — the duo recreated the eclectic Americana vibe and relaxed yet emotive vocals that defined Garcia’s music. The intimate setting and atmosphere of The Hamilton Live, which the two fittingly referred to as their “living room” for the night, made the impromptu show feel like you were right there with Garcia and the Dead back in the day.
For those lucky enough to catch Falco and Book’s living room jam session at The Hamilton, it was a magical tribute to Garcia’s songwriting. With just guitar and bass, the passionate twosome flawlessly brought the spirit of Jerry’s music to life.
