GRAMMY-winning songwriter Mitch Rowland released his debut album, Come June, last year via Erskine Records/Giant Music, and he now is touring the project on his first-ever USA headlining tour. Mitch performs in DC at 9:30 Club on Monday, March 11.
Mitch Rowland is an Ohio-born artist who found himself working at a pizza joint when he was given the opportunity to write with Harry Styles for his self-titled debut. Now as Styles’ long-time songwriter, tour guitarist, and frequent collaborator, Rowland has helped yield hits like “Meet Me in the Hallway,” “Watermelon Sugar,” and “Golden.” All of this also earned Mitch both his first-ever GRAMMY with Album of the Year for Harry’s House, and the distinction of being the first artist signed to Styles’ label, Erskine.
From Mitch’s debut album, “Here Comes The Comeback” was originally inspired by a commission from Rowland’s publisher to write something uplifting for possible ad placement. My wife is “always egging me on,” Mitch said. “We got out the laptop and she started tapping out the drum part and I came up with this chord progression I thought was kind of Wilco-ish, and it came together so fast.” Initially, he sent the song to Styles, and they bandied back and forth about which of them should record it. In the end, Rowland decided he wanted to keep it as his own. And this version, which is buoyant and melancholy at the same time, sounding like it came from an early Sixties time capsule, proves he made the right choice.
