Primus AND Coheed and Cambria recently shared a bill at The Anthem, and they somewhat unexpectedly brought along Puddles Pity Party to open the show!
Steve Satzberg was there to photograph the performances.
On August 14, Primus played a substantive set of 15 numbers, where they made their 1995 album, Tales from the Punchbowl, the star of the show. The band — bassist/vocalist Les Claypool, guitarist Larry LaLonde, and drummer Tim Alexander — played three songs from the record: “Professor Nutbutter’s House of Treats” (at the show’s midpoint), “Over the Electric Grapevine” (near the end), and “Southbound Pachyderm” (in the two-song encore).

Primus was joined by opener Puddles Pity Party for two covers in the first half of the set — “Holy Diver” by Dio and “Immigrant Song” by Led Zeppelin.
Coheed and Cambria surprised the audience with apologies that frontman Claudio Sanchez was sick and could not sing. To compensate, the band asked the audience to sing the songs, and the audience obliged!
Claudio lost his voice, and he couldn’t even speak. The rest of the band took the stage and asked the crowd if they would sing all the songs, then they called Claudio out to the stage stage and asked him if he was OK with that. The crowd did great, and the band loved it.
What was incredible is that the rest of the band kept singing their backup parts, and the crowd was carrying the lead vocals.
Imagine how that must have sounded on “Welcome Home” (from 2005’s Good Apollo, I’m Burning Star IV, Volume One: From Fear Through the Eyes of Madness), which closed the Coheed and Cambria set at The Anthem!
