Last week, my 21-year old self was in his glory when Jiffy Lube Live hosted an amazing show. It was a trio of ’90s alternative-rock heavy hitters in the form of Soul Asylum, Stone Temple Pilots, and Live. I haven’t been to a show like that in a long time.

At Jiffy Lube Live on Sept. 4, the show started with Soul Asylum. The sun was still up when the band took the stage. The band has had some personnel changes over the years but the music is still powerful. Their set started off with a personal favorite, “Somebody To Shove.” Singer, guitarist, and founding member Dave Pirner delivered the song with the same power he did 30 years ago. The band played their biggest hits like “Runaway Train,” “Misery,” and “Black Gold.” They also played some material from their upcoming album, Slowly But Shirley. When they finished the song “Freeloader,” Dave was so energetic that, somehow, his guitar strap got caught up in his shoelaces! That started one of my favorite things about a Soul Asylum show…Dave’s sense of humor and his dad jokes.

Next up was Stone Temple Pilots. I was so excited to see this band, as they are touring to celebrate the 30th anniversary of their second album, Purple. The band started off with a bar of “Meatplow.” But they quickly stopped because of a technical issue. Then singer Jeff Gutt jumped in and interacted with the audience, looking for jokes. The issue was sorted in short order and the band jumped right back into “Meatplow.” The band sounds just as strong as ever. Singer Jeff Gutt has taken the vocal duties since 2018 and does a fantastic job with the band’s older, classic material.

When they broke into the song “Vasoline,” Jeff left the stage and hopped onto the audience barrier. He worked his way from one side to the other, shaking hands, giving fist bumps, and singing his heart out.

STP is playing Purple in its entirety, in order. Once the album is over they wrap up their set with four songs from their debut, Core. After the song Plush, Jeff took a moment to pay his respects to original STP vocalist, Scott Weiland.

After a short break, Live hit the stage. They began their set of hits with “Top” from their 1994 album Throwing Copper. Much of the set was focused on that album but there were some other tracks as well. Case in point, Live’s latest single “Lady Bhang (She Got Me Rollin’)” made an appearance early in the set.

Live has also gone through personnel changes and much like Soul Asylum, the sole original member is the singer. Ed Kowalczyk still has a great voice and the new members of the band did a great job with Live’s discography. The group sounded tight and looked like they were really enjoying themselves on stage, playing some classic rock from the height of the alternative rock movement.

This whole show made me feel twenty one again and I am so glad I had the chance to see these bands playing together. I left with a huge smile on my face.
