Styx — the classic rock legends — recently graced the stage of The Lyric Baltimore. Euphoria ensued as the band took the stage, and thousands of fans draped in Styx paraphernalia crowded the sold-out theater in hopes of reconnecting with a familiar sound.

The stellar group has been in the game for over 50 years — and their ability to captivate the audience was a direct representation of their refined talent. At The Lyric on Sept. 13, Tommy Shaw added vibrancy and good feels as his hair flips drove the ladies wild. Oftentimes, the audience rushed the stage in excitement, such as when Tommy led the band in “Too Much Time on My Hands” from the classic album Paradise Theatre early in the show.

Watch the official music video for “Too Much Time on My Hands” by Styx on YouTube:

Joining Tommy as a member of the famed “original” Styx hitmaking lineup, James Young was a much needed treat by way of guitar. He is revered as one of the greats, but it was nothing like seeing the technician in action as he often played with precision with his eyes closed while boasting a smile.

Canadian artist Lawrence Gowan performed on a spinning piano as he kept the energy pumping. His animated persona brought good vibes to the crowd, and he was a stellar lead vocal on many Styx mainstay tunes.

Recently added member and younger brother of Lawrence, Terry Gowan added to the craze as he often ended his bass solos with a thrown pic to the crowd. Todd Sucherman’s drum solo was the icing on the cake.

I found myself tapping my foot and bobbing my head, particularly as the encore numbers “Mr. Roboto and “Renegade” boomed through the speakers. This was by far one of the most impressive live bands that I have ever experienced. With over five decades of experience there’s no wonder why.
