My Morning Jacket’s recent show at Merriweather Poast Pavilion was the third time I’ve covered the band for this here blog and to be completely honest, I’m not sure I have much more to add from my earlier reviews. But I will say this: I absolutely love seeing this band play live.
There is just something about their shows, whether it’s the monstrous riffs or the bouncy grooves they create, that gives off amazing vibes and makes me incredibly happy. It was a damp and humid night in Columbia, but no one seemed to notice or even care.
This show, part of the Eye to Eye Tour with Nathaniel Ratliffe and the Night Sweats (who were fine but definitely not my thing), gave the band a chance to do something a bit different from their usual tour. At Merriweather Post Pavilion on Sept. 27, they took advantage by changing the set up quite a bit from their normal fare, as if by playing to an audience mixed with fans of both bands, they were unencumbered by the expectations of a few songs they generally have to play.
Watch the official music video for “Love Love Love” by My Morning Jacket on YouTube:
I think this is the first time I’ve ever seen them where they didn’t play “Wordless Chorus.” But it worked and definitely felt like a complete show.
Still, any Jacket show is a great Jacket show and this was no different. I’m already counting the days until I get to see them again.
