Soccer Mommy recently delivered an intimate performance at The Atlantis, here in Washington, DC. Known for its cozy atmosphere and excellent acoustics, The Atlantis provided the perfect backdrop for Soccer Mommy’s introspective and beautiful indie rock.
At The Atlantis on Jan. 28, the evening commenced with an opening set by L’Rain, whose experimental soundscapes and soulful vocals captivated the audience as folks trickled in, setting an exciting tone for the night. As the lights dimmed and Soccer Mommy took the stage, the crowd’s anticipation was palpable. On her second night performing back-to-back sold-out shows in DC, it was clear that Sophie Allison, professionally known as Soccer Mommy, had the eager audience’s attention in the palm of her hand.

Currently on tour promoting her most recent release, Allison’s setlist featured many of her news tracks from her album, Evergreen, released just a few months ago in October 2024. She opened with one of her most popular songs, “Abigail,” which grasped the audience immediately. The song’s acoustic melodies and poignant lyrics immediately drew the audience into her world of reflection and musical emotion.
Throughout the night, Soccer Mommy performed a balanced mix of new material and fan favorites. Tracks like “Some Sunny Day” and “Dreaming of Falling” showcased her growth as a songwriter and her fans’ loyalty to her career and development. Her raw talent is remarkable and translates equally as beautifully both in her recorded tracks and in person. She is the type of artist that sounds even better when they’re performing in person, which is an amazing thing to experience.

The setlist also included beloved tracks from her earlier albums. “Scorpio Rising” and “Your Dog” from Clean were some of the most streamed tracks from her discography that she played. Allison’s music is both nostalgic and refreshingly original, as she blends dreamy melodies with deeply introspective lyrics.

One of the most striking aspects of the performance was Allison’s stage presence. Performing without flashy theatrics, she opted for a subtle presence and captivating calmness that made the experience feel deeply personal. Her demeanor on stage was relatable and performed in a manner that made it feel like everyone in the room was getting to know her personally through her music. This approach created an intimate atmosphere, allowing the audience to connect with both Sophie and the music in such an alluring way.
The Atlantis, with its capacity of around 450 people, offered a perfect setting for such a personal performance. Soccer Mommy played at the 9:30 Club down the block just the night before, which has a larger capacity of around 1,200 people. The smaller venue created an environment of such cohesion and fostered a connection to the music like no other. The venue’s excellent acoustics ensured that every note and lyric was delivered with clarity, enhancing the impact of the music.
In conclusion, Soccer Mommy’s concert was a testament to Sophie Allison’s evolution as an artist. Her ability to convey complex emotions through simple yet profound lyrics, combined with her understated stage presence, made for a memorable evening. As she continues to navigate her musical journey, performances like this solidify her place as a compelling voice in the indie rock scene.
