Laughs, F-Bombs, and Some Surprisingly Deep Moments: The Kind of Night You Don’t Want to End
By Michael Sprouse
The Lincoln Theatre was packed with fans ready for a recent night of laughs, nostalgia, and whatever unpredictable chaos Kevin Smith and Jason Mewes had in store. And man, did they deliver.
The dynamic duo behind the iconic characters Jay and Silent Bob, took the stage to share stories, laughs, and a glimpse into their enduring friendship — all part of the Jay and Silent Bob: The Aural Sects Tour in a turn at the Lincoln Theatre in DC on Feb. 10.
The performance was a delightful blend of nostalgia and foul mouthed story telling. Smith and Mewes recounted tales from their extensive filmography, upcoming film and comic book projects and even offered insights on fatherhood and underwear that had the audience in stitches. They also bounced between behind-the-scenes tales from Clerks, Mallrats, and beyond, roasting themselves (and each other) along the way. Their chemistry was hugely enjoyable.
Beyond the humor, what made the night special were the more personal moments. They got real about marriage and kids, getting older, and how surreal it is to still be doing this after all these years.
Smith, ever the sentimental one, talked about how much Mewes has grown over the years, and you could feel the love between them.
Watch Kevin Smith respond to Jay and Silent Bob theories on Reddit for Vanity Fair on YouTube:
But it wasn’t just a comedy show — it felt more like hanging out with two old friends who happen to have the wildest Hollywood stories.
Of course, there were plenty of ridiculous, laugh-out-loud moments; Mewes is still as unfiltered as ever, and Smith’s storytelling chops are razor-sharp.
One of the absolute highlights of the night came when Smith and Mewes decided to act out a not-yet-released Dogma comic book script. But this wasn’t just them reading — it was full-on, over-the-top performance art.
Smith, ever the showman, picked an audience member to come on stage and read the part of Metatron, originally played by Alan Rickman. Just to make things interesting, Kevin said the fan had to do it using his best Rickman voice!
What followed was an absurd, semi-improvised reading filled with exaggerated voices, ridiculous sound effects, and Mewes and Smith repeatedly lauding the spot-on vocal impersonations by Colgan, the audience member.
Smith, barely able to keep a straight face, played the movie director with the enthusiasm of a Shakespearean actor, while Colgan — enjoying his moment in the spotlight — quickly got into the ridiculousness of it all.
By the end of the segment, the entire theater was in hysterics, and Colgan had just lived out the ultimate View Askewniverse dream, co-starring in a scene with Jay and Silent Bob themselves. Just before Colgan returned to his seat, Kevin noticed that he was talking to another man standing in the main aisle. The man turned out to be Colgan’s father and Kevin and Jay were gobsmacked when he told them that Colgan was only 17!
They were stunned even further when the dad informed the duo that his son had previously performed another Alan Rickman role, that of Professor Snape from Harry Potter, because of his sound-alike vocal skills!
The evening wasn’t just about the laughs (though there were plenty). It was about seeing two guys who built something truly special, still doing what they love, still making fans laugh, and still somehow making even the weirdest, dumbest moments feel like magic.
If Jay and Silent Bob: The Aural Sects Tour rolls through your town, don’t even hesitate. It’s a mix of comedy, nostalgia, and completely unpredictable madness that only these two could deliver. Whether you’re a lifelong fan or just looking for a wild night of entertainment, it’s absolutely worth the trip.
Snootchie Bootchies, indeed.
