Violent Vira brought droves of fans to 9:30 Club recently for her stand-out style of hard rock and metal. Her show at the DC venue had been sold out for weeks ahead of time.

At 9:30 Club on Nov. 17, it was immediately apparent that Vira’s fans are virulently dedicated to her. They screamed at nearly everything she did during her hourlong set. Vira has styled herself ala Wednesday Adams — a baggy black sweater over a collar and mini skirt, bangs portraying a constant moodiness. It works for her style!

She opened with the infectious “Saccharine,” and she had the club singing along to every word from the first note. On what Vira called “An emo love song,” “Common Decency,” lights flashed at a rapid pace as Vira swapped between belting the lyrics and letting the crowd take the chorus.

Fans even knew words to songs the Setlist.FM marks as “unreleased.” That’s thanks to social media, where it seems much of Violent Vira’s fan base is cultivated from. It proves the theory that social media concert videos don’t so much spoil the live experience as they do prepare fans for their own show. Call it pregaming with music instead of booze.

Vira has a great voice, one that is a pleasure to listen to. There’s a gentleness to her tone — even when she’s letting it rip, like on “Lil Crush” — that contrasts beautifully with the hard-driving music underneath.

Speaking of that music, her four-piece band create a perfectly heavy sound. It’s so heavy, I felt it under my feet in the balcony. And they do this without losing the complexity of the music to any sort of distortion in the mix — always a risk with harder music in a small room.

Violent Vira is a magnetic entertainer with a distinctive sound and the vocal substance to justify her early rise. I suspect that in a year or two—as bigger venues and larger grosses come as a result of more streaming success—she’ll emerge as a leading powerhouse in the future of heavy metal. We’ll see her in DC again soon, likely one level up at 9:30 Club’s sister the Anthem.

Joining Violent Vira on the bill were IVRI and Brayton. Keep scrolling for photos of the openers!

  1. Haha, right? Magnetic entertainer, indeed! Sounds like Viras stage presence is so intense it might actually reverse gravity – I saw the balcony go *up* instead of down! And those fans being virulently dedicated? Sounds less like a medical emergency and more like theyve got tickets to every show, including the one in their dreams. Though maybe magnetic just means she attracts *so much* attention she could power a small city. Either way, looks like this emerging star is already brighter than the flashing lights at Common Decency. Cant wait for her next show where shell undoubtedly perform How to Build a Power Amplifier While Singing!
