Undeniably, this man has had a successful 30 years in the entertainment business. Headlining his sixth tour, “Past, Present, Future,” Usher began on August 20 in DC at the Capital One Arena, which had sold out within hours. An additional show was added on August 21. As concertgoers waited in anticipation for the show to start, the DJ kept the audience entertained, engaging both old and new fans alike.

Starting with a new song from his latest album, “Coming Home,” the tempo was set, and the audience was locked in. To revisit the past, we had to travel back to where it all started — when Usher was a young star and we all thought of him as our little boyfriend. The “My Way” and “8701” eras were a great time, and there were a few Easter eggs in his performances that only day-one fans would notice.

Having multiple hit songs, I wondered how he would incorporate all of them into a setlist that made sense. I was satisfied with the selection of songs played from top to bottom there was something for everyone. I was a little nervous, as just a week before the DC show, Usher had injured his neck and had to cancel two shows. This was his first performance since the announcement, and with rest and time off, Usher managed to put on an amazing show. He brought a few elements from his Vegas residency, including skating and the famous Usher bucks, and the pole dance performing many of your favorite hits such as “My Way,” “U Remind Me,” “Caught Up,” “Little Freak,” and so much more.

Experiencing one of the best performances of our time was top-tier on many levels. He effectively connected his Past, Present, and Future together, taking us into a glimpse of 2044 to see an older version of Usher. It kind of felt like a farewell tour for a man who has accomplished so much at such a young age; I wouldn’t be surprised if he took a break.

Remarkable and incredibly talented, Usher left everything on the stage, revealing a side of him that many don’t often see. If you haven’t had the opportunity to witness this greatness in person, I encourage you to go — if you can find tickets. Usher was the first person I saw in concert 20 years ago, and he remains my favorite artist.

USHER.
