Last week I was introduced to some new music. It isn’t often that I get to shoot a show almost immediately after learning of the artist. But that’s what happened when Alfie Templeman headlined The Atlantis. What made the evening even better was discovering another fun band in the opener, Your Neighbors.

Your Neighbors played a fun set of really catchy songs at The Atlantis on Oct. 11. It’s a trio of guitars, drums, and keys. It’s good pop rock with a nice mix of guitars and synths, not going too heavy in either direction. When singer/guitarist Walker Robinson broke a string on his guitar and ran backstage to ask headliner Alfie Templeman if he could borrow one of his. Walker started the next song using a borrowed guitar but quickly switched to another one that seemed to be a better fit. But it was worth it as I found myself bopping along even though it was my first time hearing their music.

After a short break, Alfie Templeman and his band appeared on stage. They were pretty pumped to play and let everyone know it! Alfie recently dropped his third album, Radiosoul — and he is on an extensive tour supporting it. You can check out his most recent single, “Eyes Wide Shut,” here.

I was immediately impressed by the energy of the entire band. They were so happy to be touring and playing the new music. After a few songs, Alfie would ask the crowd if they thought everything was going well. Of course, the crowd hollered back with approval.

The music was upbeat and fun. It had some beautiful guitar work. What was also impressive was the rhythm section holding down a disco beat for much of the night. The band was tight. Alfie was a lot of fun to watch and I gained an appreciation for his songwriting.

Standout songs to me, being brand new to Alfie’s music, were “Film Scene Daydream,” “Hello Lonely,” “Eyes Wide Shut,” and “Vultures.”

The live music was a bit more raw than the album tracks. To me, that’s what I go to shows for! The entire club was full of great energy. The crowd loved him! Everywhere I looked, people were dancing, singing, and having fun.

If you see Alfie coming back to the area, I would definitely recommend seeing a show before he starts playing in bigger venues. He’s got that kind of talent and sound.
