Live Review: Peter Hook & The Light @ 9:30 Club — 9/1/24

Mancunian icon Peter Hook recently swung by DC to play songs of New Order and Joy Division at 9:30 Club. It was a welcome return to 9:30 Club for Hooky, who performed there a few times in 2010 and 2011 in the early days of touring with his band Peter Hook & The Light.

Those early 9:30 Club appearances focused on revisiting the albums of Joy Division, but this time around, Hooky and his band dug into the greatest hits of both rock innovators Joy Division and the successor dance band New Order, playing through the tracklisting of the Substance compilation albums for both bands.

Live Review: Avril Lavigne w/ Simple Plan @ Jiffy Lube Live — 8/31/24

While the weather may have made things a little, … well… Complicated, it didn’t stop over 22,000 people from recently packing into Jiffy Lube Live to see Simple Plan and Avril Lavigne on their Greatest Hits Tour. The rain delay unfortunately meant that the opening band, Girlfriends, was unable to play their set, but lucky for us, we did get to see them come out to perform a few songs with the two headlining acts.

Live Review: Old Crow Medicine Show and Molly Tuttle & Golden Highway @ Wolf Trap — 8/30/24

As the lone US national park founded in the name of the performing arts, Wolf Trap in Vienna, Virginia, is ceremonious and alluring not just for concert attendees, but for the invited musical guests, who get an entirely different view of the place.

Like the wolves said to run wild on the property in past centuries, the acts taking the stage of the storied Filene Center customarily do so with invigoration granted by the vast park and its hidden delights. The mostly forested grounds — 117 aces in total — can restore any band that’s been chasing adventures out on the road, and the park has proven to be an ideal setting for musicians to reach new heights together.

Live Review: Silverada w/ Jason Scott & The High Heat @ The Atlantis — 8/30/24

Any number of people have bemoaned the state of mainstream country music. Tom Petty called it bad rock music with fiddle. Podcaster and author Tyler Mahan Coe cuts off his discussions of the history of the genre at the year 2000. But there are still folks carrying the torch for classic country, although you may not find them on the pop-dominated country radio stations. Among these folks are Austin, Texas’s Silverada, who headlined The Atlantis recently.

Multidisciplinary artist Donald Glover recently brought his latest and last hip hop show to DC at a sold-out Capital One Arena for his New World Order Tour, in support of his final album under the rap moniker Childish Gambino,  Bando Stone and the New World. The musician, director, writer, actor, and comedian has continuously found ways to build entire worlds around his work from TV show’s like “Atlanta” and “Swarm,” and movies like “Guava Island” but especially with his music, and his DC date was no exception.
