Hailing from the small town of Hackett, Arkansas, boasting a population of 800 and not a single stoplight, 19-year-old phenom Waylon Wyatt paid a visit to the 9:30 Club in DC. Wyatt has experienced a massive rise in the modern Americana and red dirt scenes. Setting off on his anticipated Dustpiles World Tour, following the July release of his debut album of the same name, the young artist has proven that his transition from viral sensation to legitimate touring artist is well underway.

The demographic inside the 9:30 Club featured a unique mix of fans on Oct. 20. A massive wave of Gen Z attendees, who likely discovered Wyatt’s hits through social media, stood among more seasoned country and classic rock fans.

Wyatt and his backing band emerged onto the stage with an air of confidence about them. Wyatt immediately established an energetic tone in the venue, launching straight into “Pretty Little Liar.” Wyatt’s raspy vocal delivery was on point, and he showed off his vocal chops by transitioning smoothly from a soft, melodic tone all the way to a raw, abrasive voice. The integration of more traditional bluegrass instrumentation definitely added to the live performance. Fiddle, mandolin, and heavy rock percussion, along with backing guitar, created a very full and appealing sound.

Between tracks, Wyatt showcased his natural gift for storytelling, engaging with the very vocal fans who made the venue feel much more like an intimate hometown bar. Fans noticed someone who was apparently Wyatt’s father on one of the overhangs in the venue before chanting, “Waylon’s dad, Waylon’s dad!”

The emotional peak of the night came midway through the set with back-to-back performances of “In Loving Melody” and “Box of Bones.” Wyatt shared the inspiration behind his songwriting: the tragic loss of his older brother, Dylan, a musician who took his own life when Wyatt was just eight years old. Wyatt explained that he picked up the guitar to honor his brother’s memory, adding immense emotional weight to the performance.

To showcase his influences and provide his own take on a classic, the band performed a thrilling cover of Steve Earle’s 1988 classic, “Copperhead Road.” With the full backing band putting their all into the cover, it sounded absolutely amazing. With a hint of their own Appalachian-inspired twang, the rendition pulled in the older classic rock fans in the venue.

The high of the night occurred when the opening notes of “Arkansas Diamond” echoed throughout the venue. A love letter to his home state, the crowd felt the energy and put their lights up into the sky. Wyatt’s powerful, clear voice really stood out during the slower ballad, accompanied by the beautiful drones of the pedal steel — with the fans making the venue shine “like an Arkansas Diamond.”

The chanting for an encore began the second the stage went dark. Returning for a four-song finale, Wyatt delivered a blistering performance of “Jailbreak,” a duet originally recorded with Bayker Blankenship. The night ended with “Everything Under the Sun.” The live performance captured the desperate energy of his beginnings, transforming the room into a final singalong.

Waylon Wyatt firmly established himself as a headliner entirely deserving of his rapid ascent, backed by musical talent, an evident understanding of the genre’s rich history, and incredible vocal ability. The intimate confines of venues like the 9:30 Club will likely soon be a distant memory for Wyatt, an artist on a clear trajectory to much larger venues.
