Back in October of last year, Jerry Cantrell self-released his fourth solo album, I Want Blood. You may also know him from his famous band, Alice in Chains. During a recent show at The Fillmore Silver Spring, he played music from both solo and band catalogs to a packed house. To make a great show even better, Jerry brought Filter on the tour with him to open. This show made the 24-year-old that’s trapped inside me very happy.

Filter

Filter took the stage to a pretty large crowd at The Fillmore Silver Spring on Feb. 7. Of course, Filter isn’t an unknown opener. Robert Patrick and his band have had some pretty big hits in the alternative world with “Hey Man,” “Nice Shot,” and “Take a Picture.” The set was full of power and energy.

And if you’ve ever listened to Filter, that’s no surprise. They began the night’s event with “You Walk Away” and kept the momentum up until they played their biggest hit, “Take a Picture.” I was wondering how singer Robert Patrick’s voice had held up after so many years of his signature scream. Turns out it has held up pretty well! Their set was nine powerful songs, including their most well-known songs as well as tracks from their 2023 release, The Algorithm.

Jerry Cantrell’s set began with a tribal drum beat before anyone took to the stage. As soon as Jerry and his band emerged on stage, they broke into “Psychotic Break,” the first track from his second album, Degradation Trip. It’s a great track to start with. It’s unmistakably Jerry but definitely not Alice in Chains. That’s not to say Alice In Chains weren’t represented. After “Psychotic Break,” they tore right into “Them Bones” off of AIC’s sophomore album, Dirt.

Jerry’s band for the tour consists of Jerry on guitar and vocals, Greg Puciato on vocals, Roy Mayorga on drums, Eliot Lorango on bass, and Zach Throne on guitar and vocals. I was pleasantly surprised at how well the band was able to recreate the Alice in Chains harmonies. It took Jerry, Greg, and Zach to do it, but it sounded great!

The band never missed a beat. There wasn’t a whole lot of banter between songs. And, unfortunately, when there was, between the crowd and the mics being a little bit low in the mix, it was difficult to hear. Of course, my ears aren’t as young as they used to be, either.

Jerry Cantrell

Jerry’s setlist spanned his solo career with a sprinkling of Alice in Chains songs from Facelift and Dirt. I wasn’t sure what was going to make the cut, but I was thrilled to hear some of my personal favorites in the mix, like his latest single, “Afterglow.”

Watch the official music video for “Afterglow” by Jerry Cantrell on YouTube:

Other favorites like “Cut You In,” “Brighten,” “Off The Rails,” and “Siren Song” sounded great against AIC tracks like “Hate to Feel,” “Man in the Box,” and of course the song that wrapped the show, “Rooster.”

What I liked about this show was that it wasn’t focused on the past. Both Filter and Jerry Cantrell played music that spanned their careers; Careers still vibrant and not stopping any time soon!
