Big Somthing’s Spring Tour transformed the pocket-sized, tiered room of The Atlantis into a high-octane sonic jam laboratory this past Saturday, May 2. Frontman Nick MacDaniels set a local tone early, sporting a Sean Taylor shirt — a nod to the late DC sports legend whose grit and strength mirrored the band’s own powerhouse performance that night.
The setlist was a masterclass in the band’s “grassroots phenomenon” sound. Opening with the relentless drive of “Algorithm” and “Megalodon,” the group quickly moved into a sprawl of fan favorites like “Tumbleweed” and a shimmering cover of M83’s “Midnight City.” The highlight for many was the debut of Rage Against the Machine’s “Killing in the Name” for the encore, a first-time play that pushed the venue’s pristine acoustics to their absolute limit.
Through the lens, the energy was palpable. The tight proximity of the stage allowed for a “pure” look at the telepathic interplay between the musicians. It wasn’t just a fit for the room; it was a total takeover.
