Jack Cooper sees his music as part of the fix for a world that might be as pitiless as it’s ever been.

Though his band, Modern Nature, had previously used an unrestricted approach and ambiguous lyrics to offer listeners escape, the group has evolved in its way and its makeup to move toward a more structured, balanced sound.

This new resonance distinguishes the latest album, The Heat Warps, and it was on dynamic display the night of Jan. 22 in Washington DC as Cooper and his bandmates played to an intimate audience at DC9.

A severe snowstorm may have been on the forecast last Saturday night, but inside The Anthem, Gregory Alan Isakov’s “Intimate Acoustic Evening” tour kept the warm DC music scene alive. Despite the DC Mayor declaring a state of emergency, Isakov’s famously dedicated fanbase braved the impending snowfront to fill the sold-out venue. The space was transformed into an ‘intimate’ seated theater with no barricade to accommodate the audience.

Danah Denice’s band has a special sound: double bass sometimes bowed, sometimes fingered with percussion using wrapped sticks, piano, and electric and acoustic guitars. In their recent sold-out show at Rams Head on Stage, the first intro was an intricate soundscape with an ethereal mood using keyboard and bowed bass, then Danah stepped out in a silver gown and a shimmery white flowing cape draped down her back.

Her sweet vocals stood out against a subtle keyboard and bass line. The band steadily increased intensity as Danah belted out, “I ain’t got no rules” in soulful darkness and a powerful softness.

So, first thing’s first: This was definitely NOT a Silversun Pickups show. It was a solo show by Brian Aubert, singer and guitarist for Silversun Pickups. He, CROONeR, and Che Arthur are touring together playing acoustic sets, and they recently appeared at Songbyrd Music House in DC.
