The Kills

The Kills sold out a date at 9:30 Club, and so did what many bands would like to do when they have an empty tour date on their schedule: They added another show!

This additional show, however, came first on the calendar, and so The Kills effectively showed up for a recent warm-up date to their main event at 9:30 Club. The Kills’ Alison Mosshart thanked the crowd for coming out on a cold night with short notice, which was “very punk” of us.

Reconciling life’s grim inevitabilities — frustration, loneliness and, at the end of it all, death — might not project as the most inspirational topics for many songwriters.

Yet Indigo De Souza has explored these notions to remarkable effect on her first few albums and, with one of the most exquisite voices in all indie rock, has established herself as a creative power to behold and to be heard.

The 26-year-old brought her band to Ottobar in Baltimore not too long ago and performed an eye-opening 15 songs to a sold-out, fervent downstairs room at the storied North Howard Street venue.

Rare it is that a musician draws critical praise so consistently to become a consensus generational talent. But after emerging as a pioneer on Chicago’s vigorous jazz scene, Makaya McCraven is being heralded far and wide as something of a genius.

I imagine most people have gone to a show and have discovered an opener because they were there to see the headliner. Have you ever discovered a headliner because you were there for the opener? That happened to me last year when I saw Gruff Rhys (he’s playing DC9 in March!) open for This Is the Kit. Their calm, expansive, proggy indie folk caught my attention and hasn’t let go since.

I had been told that St. Paul and the Broken Bones is the kind of band that has to be seen or experienced live. It was a thrill, then, to have the chance to catch the band as they recently took their Angels in Science Fiction Tour to Baltimore’s Rams Head Live!
