David Schelzel, the eternally boyishly charming frontman of The Ocean Blue, was merely 21 years old when his band dropped their major label self-titled debut album in 1989. Hailing from a small-town environment outside of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, David fronted his band on their very first big-city shows when he was just a teenager in high school.

And so one of those early big-city performances was in Washington, DC, at a now-defunct venue called the Eastside Club in the then-quite-adventurous area of Half Street NW. In his band’s recent appearance at The Birchmere, David reflected that it was quite an eye-opening experience for a relatively sheltered kid to find himself there on those DC streets at 2am after their show.

Very cool punk rock show at Nevermore Hall in Baltimore: veteran rockers Descendents and Frank Turner & The Sleeping Souls were supported by NOBRO. If you’re reading this, I assume you’re already familiar with Descendents and Frank, and you already know they both always put on a great show, so the TLDR here is: “Go see NOBRO!”

The Runarounds as a band are a very unique case in the music scene. Unlike traditional groups, gathering members from their local scene, The Runarounds were assembled through a rigorous casting process initiated by Jonas Pate and Josh Pate, the creators of the hit series Outer Banks. The objective between the Pate twins was to find five genuine musicians who could not only act, but write, record, and perform original material as a cohesive group. From a pool of over 5,000 applicants in 2020, William Lipton, Axel Ellis, Jeremy Yun, Zendé Murdock, and Jesse Golliher were chosen to form the real-life nonfiction band capable of outshining its fictional origins.

Drink The Sea is the supergroup you didn’t know you needed. Consisting of Peter Buck (of REM) on guitar, Alain Johannes (of Eleven, Queens Of The Stone Age) on vocal and guitar, Barrett Martin (of Screaming Trees, Mad Season) on drums, Duke Garwood on vocals, guitar, and soprano saxophone, Kelsey Mines on bass, and Lisette Garcia on vibraphone, the band has just released their double album debut and are touring the USA.

The music is an intoxicating blend of world and alternative music and it was on full display at The Hamilton Live recently.

Co-headliners Dave Hause & the Mermaid and Strike Anywhere recently delivered a night at Baltimore’s Ottobar where you could feel the community in the room. People happily packed themselves into the venue and despite such tight quarters, the atmosphere remained remarkably gracious. Fans navigated the shoulder-to-shoulder space with a level of kindness that any music scene would envy.

Margo Price is a firecracker, and she burned the house down in her recent appearance at the 9:30 Club. She brought the true spirit of outlaw country, tough and defiant, and unabashedly political. Her show was raucous and rowdy, but also intelligent, passionate and deep. It was one of the finest nights of music I’ve seen this year.

On a sold-out Tuesday night at The Atlantis, Say She She didn’t ease into their groove — they summoned it.

For the 2026 Cut & Rewind Tour stop in Washington, DC, the Brooklyn-based trio arrived backed by a muscular four-piece ensemble anchored by members of cult funk outfit Orgōne. Guitarist and producer Sergio Rios, keyboardist Dan Hastie, bassist Dale Jennings, and drummer Sam Halterman took the stage first, locking into a simmering pocket that felt less like an introduction and more like an invocation.
