“Who knew that in this place, on this stage we would get the loudest and greatest crowd in the world?!” Donnie Wahlberg recently told the capacity crowd at Merriweather Post Pavilion. And loud is an understatement, as the cheers from fans nearly matched the massive sound system.

The Magic Summer Tour is the first headlining tour for New Kids on the Block in 10 years. The band just released their eighth full length record, Still Kids. The Magic Summer was named after their 1990 tour of the same name. This time, though, heavy hitters Paula Abdul and DJ Jazzy Jeff opened the evening — but more of that in a moment.

Making our way into Merriweather Post Pavilion, I saw a sea of neon pink, yellow, and green as fans of not only New Kids on the Block but of late 1980’s dance pop turned out in droves to unwind, have fun, and celebrate the end of Summer in style.

Wolf Trap recently witnessed a jazz performance of exceptional brilliance as the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra (JLCO), led by the legendary Wynton Marsalis, took the stage. For an evening brimming with musical mastery and improvisational flair, the 15-member ensemble delivered a show that was both a testament to their virtuosity and a celebration of jazz’s rich history.

Melbourne, Australia’s King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard are one of a very small group of artists who put out great music but whose greatness is only matched by the sheer volume of music being produced. (Guided by Voices may be the only other highly visible touring band to consistently release several albums each year.)

A few years ago, Midge Ure told us at Parklife DC how his cover of “The Man Who Sold the World” by David Bowie gained new prominence as a viral stream.

Japanese video game creator Hideo Kojima visited Midge Ure at a show and expressed his interest in using the song as the theme for Metal Gear Solid — and a few years later, the proposal became reality. “The entire opening sequence of this final installment of a five-game series was based on ‘The Man Who Sold The World.’ It tapped into an entirely different audience,” Midge told Parklife.

It was thrilling then to see the cover resurface in Midge Ure’s setlist for his recent performance at Rams Head on Stage, which our contributor Steve Satzberg photographed.

Not too long ago, legendary new wavers DEVO once again broke the mold over four songs in an NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert. The brilliant quintet played a thoroughly unique show, surfacing rarely played tunes that had the room jumping.

Live Review: Our House @ The Hamilton Live — 8/9 + 8/10/24

The Hamilton Live played host to the Crosby, Stills, Nash, & Young tribute band, Our House, for a two night run last weekend. Tribute bands, generally speaking, can be a lot of fun. Our House was no exception but with a bit of a difference. Every member of the band has a tie to David Crosby, Stephen Stills, Graham Nash, and/or Neil Young. That’s a pretty elite group of musicians so you know they are going to do justice and pay homage to the music. The show is masterfully performed and split into two sets.

Few entertainers can use instruments to fascinating and hilarious effect, but Fred Armisen has an acute and relatable sense of humor that makes him one of the most beloved comedians in all the land.

But he’s also a longtime musician and an educated, discerning listener. Both his knowledge of bands and his connections in the industry can be described as far-reaching.

Honest Lee Soul performed to a packed house recently at Rams Head On Stage in Annapolis, Maryland. The band was formed in Annapolis and takes pride in being part of their local scene while also continually stretching their geographical and musical boundaries.

The core band features five members and they added two background singers to amp up the special occasion. Rams Head On Stage is an intimate space designed as a listening room, but that didn’t stop Honest Lee Soul from bringing high energy and a big sound to the stage.
