Stephan Jenkins and Third Eye Blind haven’t had a hit song in the charts since the turn of the century, but you’d never know it from the huge crowd at last week’s show at Merriweather Post Pavilion. “This is the biggest crowd we’ve ever played to at this venue” Jenkins told the audience, resulting in a great roar.

Despite lineup shuffles, label changes and the ongoing evolution of the music industry, Jenkins’ songs have stood the test of time and drawn in fans from across generations.

Midge Ure, the warm and gregarious Scotsman who achieved global fame as the frontman for British new wave titans Ultravox, soon embarks on a 2024 solo tour of the USA. Midge’s Band in a Box 2024 Tour arrives locally for a date at Rams Head on Stage in Annapolis, Maryland, on August 13.

Prior to the tour, Midge chatted with Parklife DC’s Mickey McCarter about the specifics of his new show, turning 70 years old, the 40th anniversary of Live Aid, and Chris Cross, his late friend and Ultravox bandmate.

Devoted fans can certainly appreciate when artists take a creative pause. But for the musician whose songs uplift and unite, an unintended result might be the depression of listeners who cherish their work and even rely on it as sustenance.

Followers have been hoping for Blind Pilot to return to the studio since the Oregon-based band last released an album in 2016. As live shows became less frequent, those hopes turned to prayers and online pleas. Meanwhile, leader Israel Nebeker found himself seeking rejuvenation as a songwriter. More so, he needed a soul-changing experience to grant him a different perspective.

Frances Forever just performed her favorite show of her tour — but she doesn’t want you to tell the other cities. 

Alongside Grace Gardner, Frances Forever brought flowered covered mic stands, various stuffed animals from fans, and bubbly, synth-filled indie pop to The Atlantis stage in DC on June 15.

Live Aid was held on July 13, 1985. Thomas Dolby participated from London, and the Thompson Twins performed in Philadelphia for the biggest concert festival of the decade. Thirty-nine years later, Dolby and Thompson Twins frontman Tom Bailey find themselves sharing a touring festival bill for the Totally Tubular Festival, and a seven-act iteration of the roving show recently landed at The Anthem in DC.
