A local crowd in an intimate venue on a Saturday night: It’s both comforting AND electric. Age of Ruin took the stage at the Pocket in DC’s Shaw, joined by fellow Virginia bands Skin Testament and Shovelhead A.D. With a 75-person capacity, the space made it easy for the audience to connect not just with each other, but with the bands themselves. It’s as if everyone had a front row seat and a stake in the game. Age of Ruin and friends delivered one of those shows where the bands and the audience were really in sync.

After full-throttle sets from Skin Testament and Shovelhead AD on Jan. 10, Age of Ruin started off their set with “The Traveler,” the heavy-hitting fourth track from their recently released Nothingman album, and the crowd was all in. No need to coax anyone forward, by the second song a friendly mosh pit had already begun. It didn’t matter that the audience was small; the vibes were huge. Everyone was locked in to the music, feeding off the band’s powerful vocals and soaring guitar solos. There was a sense of community that you just don’t get at bigger shows. The bands watched and supported each other’s sets, and strangers bonded over shared favorites. As the last song faded, everyone was chanting for “10 more songs” before the encore hit.

Age of Ruin’s set was all about connection. The band never lost momentum, and capped things off with a brand new, unreleased song. “Falling” had the whole room buzzing. The sound was tight and powerful, with ripping guitars and heavy vocals while the venue’s acoustics made even the heaviest riffs feel intimate.

Below: a few favorite frames from a night where the music, the people, and the energy all came together.
