When examining the whole of pop music through a rear-view mirror, it becomes clear that most musicians have little new to say after their first and second records.

Marina Diamandis, known eponymously as Marina and formerly known as Marina and the Diamonds, doesn’t have that problem. The Welsh chanteuse released Love + Fear, in April via Atlantic Records, drawing from some study she did on psychology and how the two emotions in the title of the record drive all of human behavior. She broke it down for her audience in a very crowded show at The Anthem recently.

The last time I saw BANKS in DC was during her Goddess era, just five years ago. She arrived again recently to greet her loyal fanbase at The Fillmore Silver Spring, promoting her just-released third studio album III. I had a lot of catching up to do!

Aly & AJ brought both nostalgia and future to The Fillmore Silver Spring recently with support from Armors. Anyone who came-of-age in the mid 2000s has probably heard of the duo, consisting of sisters Aly and AJ Michalka. They released their pop-rock debut album Into the Rush in 2005 and Insomniatic in 2007, including the single “Potential Breakup Song.” After a decade-long break, Aly & AJ returned in 2017 with the ’80s infused, indie-pop Ten Years, and released Sanctuary on May 10. Danish electropop singer Mø recently performed in a sold-out show at the 9:30 Club, bringing joyful music to fans eager to sing along, stomp, and dance. Known for hits like “Lean On” and other musical collaborations, Mø showed that she’s capable of standing on her own as a pop singer with catchy songs such as “Kamikaze” and “Nights With You.”
