Ticket Giveaway: Teenage Fanclub @ 9:30 Club, 10/14/16

TeenageFanclub_Flyer

The Scottish quintet Teenage Fanclub return with their first new album in six years, and that album, Here, appeared on Sept. 9 via Merge Records.

Over at Merge, they sure like their power pop, and Teenage Fanclub is right at home on their roster. But singer Norman Blake certainly leads his band through their own sunny, jangly sound. Listening to Teenage Fanclub is like having a great conversation with an old friend: You may know where it’s going but you’ll enjoy the ride.

Teenage Fanclub are touring in support of their new album, and they visit the 9:30 Club on Friday, Oct. 14. Parklife DC is giving you a chance to go!

Watch Teenage Fanclub perform “Thin Air” from the new album for BBC Radio 6 Music on Sept. 13, 2016 on YouTube:

Ticket Giveaway: Warpaint @ 9:30 Club, 10/4/16

Warpaint Warpaint [and first to left jennylee for reference in this blog] (Photo by Mia Kirby)

I adore Warpaint. And they really caught my attention with their single “Love Is to Die” on their self-titled sophomore album in 2014. I think they hit peak heartbroken dreampop, but they did so in such an articulate, and yes feminine, way that the song proved irresistible.

And soon afterward, as a big Duran Duran admirer, I enjoyed their very good take on “The Chauffeur” for the recent tribute album, Making Patterns Rhyme. It was indescribably a wholly appropriate cover, and I would like Simon Le Bon to name check it when it comes to Duran Duran covers over William Shatner’s “Planet Earth.”

What a time for the classic shoegaze period of the ‘90s! Last year, UK music aficionados welcomed Ride to the 9:30 Club, and this year it’s going to be Lush!

Yes, Miki Berenyi and Emma Anderson (vocals and guitars) along with Phil King (bass) have returned with the addition of drummer Justin Welch (Spitfire, Elastica). And they released a new EP, Blind Spot via their own Edamame label, and they sound as amazing and beautiful as ever. Lush are now on a world tour that stops in DC at the 9:30 Club on Wednesday, Sept. 21, and you can now win tickets to go.

Revisit the official music video for “Sweetness and Light” by Lush on YouTube:

Ticket Giveaway: Echo & The Bunnymen @ 9:30 Club, 9/9/16

Ian McCulloch and Will Sergeant are bringing Echo & The Bunnymen back to DC in a sold-out show at the 9:30 Club on Friday, Sept. 9! To celebrate, Parklife DC is throwing a little new wave party that we are calling Careless Memories: A Salute to Psych, where we will play a lot of the neo-psychedelic jams that gave classic new wave a hazy electronic edge.

I invite you to join our party, which will be held at Dodge City on Thursday, Sept. 8 (right around the corner from the 9:30 Club on the night before The Bunnymen perform)! You can RSVP on Facebook or show up — admission is free.

But wait! To take the celebration to the next level, we are giving away a pair of tickets to the sold-out Bunnymen concert! Now, that’s smart thinking! Ian would be proud.

Ticket Giveaway: Skye & Ross @ 9:30 Club, 8/25

Skye & Ross from Morcheeba (Photo by Daniela+Glunz)

UK trip hop trio Morcheeba are always at the top of their game, with genre-refining albums. But in 2014, Skye Edwards and Ross Godfrey were touring without Ross’ brother Paul when they were inspired to bring more live intensity to their music.

Hence, Skye & Ross spun off into a side project, called Skye & Ross, and they are grooving back into our lives with a debut album, SKYE | ROSS, on Sept. 2. As Ross said, “What Skye and I do naturally when you ask us to make music together, and yet not necessarily a continuation of what we’d been doing with Morcheeba. It therefore felt only right to give it a new identity.”

You can hear for yourself! Listen to the official audio of first single “Light of Gold” from Skye and Ross on YouTube:

The band will continue to make albums as Morcheeba, Ross reported, but meanwhile Skye & Ross from Morcheeba have launched a tour in support of their new project, and they visit the 9:30 Club on Thursday, August 25. Parklife DC is giving away a pair of tickets so that you can check them out firsthand! To win, simply leave a comment on this blog. You can leave any comment, but how about tell us your favorite Morcheeba song?

Ticket Giveaway: David Cross: Making America Great Again! @ Warner Theatre, 2/19/16

DavidCross_640x360

You might know him as America’s most clueless psychiatrist — Tobias Fünke on Arrested Development, a man who thought it was a good idea to call attention to his proficiency as an analyst AND a therapist by combining the two as “analrapist.”

Of course, Tobias is portrayed by the prolific David Cross, who also makes lots of sketches in Mr. Show and stars in other situational comedies like “Todd Margaret.” One thing he has *not* done much of in recent years is tour with a stand-up routine. But starting this week in California, he’s making it right.

Last night, David Cross launched his first stand-up tour in six years -— a six-month international tour, titled “Making America Great Again!” And it arrives in DC in a few short weeks for two shows at the Warner Theatre on Friday, Feb. 19.

Watch David talk about his show “Todd Margaret” and going on tour again in an appearance on Late Night with Seth Meyers on Jan. 12, 2016:

His early DC show is sold out, but you can win a pair of tickets to see the late show (showtime at 10:30pm on Feb. 19)! For your chance to win these tickets, simply leave a comment on this post using a valid email address between now and 5pm on Friday, Jan. 29. Feel free to leave any comment, but perhaps share your favorite movie, show, or joke by David Cross! One entry per email address, please. Tickets for this show are also available through Live Nation.

For the rules of this giveaway…

Comments will close on Friday, Jan. 29 at 5pm and we will randomly select a winner. The winner will be notified by email. The winner must respond to our email within 24 hours, or they will forfeit their tickets and we will pick another winner.

Tickets will be available to the winner at the Warner Theatre box office on the night of the concert. The tickets must be claimed with a valid ID. The winner must be old enough to attend the specific concert or must have a parent’s permission to enter if he/she is under 18 years old.

Good luck!

Ticket Giveaway: Faith No More @ Merriweather Post Pavilion, 8/2/15

In May, Faith No More released their first studio album in 18 years — Sol Invictus. The reconstituted band is touring in support of that album with a stop at the Merriweather Post Pavilion on Sunday, August 2, and Parklife DC is giving away a pair of tickets to the show!

For your chance to win these tickets, simply leave a comment on this post using a valid email address by 5pm on Friday, July 24. In your comment, share your favorite song by Faith No More! One entry per email address, please.

The San Francisco alt-metal band started work on the album after the successful tour, The Second Coming, which took them on the road for the first time in more than 10 years. Sol Invictus was recorded in an Oakland studio owned by Faith No More bassist Bill Gold and features the last lineup of the band including drummer Mike Bordin and keyboardist Roddy Bottum along with guitarist Jon Hudson and vocalist Mike Patton.

Watch Faith No More perform new song “Superhero” for the BBC Radio 1 Rock Show on July 12, 2015:

Bill Gould points to the self-produced sound of the new record as reflecting that of the band’s early days. “Hypnotic and gothic, we’re coming back to where we were with our first album,” he said in a press release, “Siouxsie and the Banshees, Roxy Music. Then Patton’s being Patton, crooning, screaming, with a bit of soul underneath it all. We’ve always taken strange influences and smashed them together.”

We ‘80s kids might best remember “We Care a Lot” but Faith No More really hit the alternative charts a little later in the late ’80s and early ’90s with hits like “Epic,” “Midlife Crisis,” and “A Small Victory.”
