Don’t Miss: La Sera @ Songbyrd Music House, 10/20/16

Los Angeles noise poppers La Sera are staying busy! The band, fronted by the effervescent Katy Goodman, released a full-length album, Music for Listening to Music to, in March. They toured on that album, performing at the 9:30 Club in May. (Read our review of that show!)

Surely not done for the year, La Sera dropped a new extended play, Queens, via Polyvinyl Records on Sept. 30. Then on Friday, the band launched a tour with their friend Springtime Carnivore, who also has new music! (Don’t be fooled by the name; Springtime Carnivore is the winsome Greta Morgan, who has collaborated with La Sera in the past. Read our interview with Greta!)

The La Sera tour with Springtime Carnivore stops in DC at Songbyrd Music House on Thursday, Oct. 20.

The new La Sera EP contains a cover of Led Zeppelin’s “Whole Lotta Love,” which is a song they have performed live with their easygoing psychedelic flavor for a while. Listen to La Sera’s cover of “Whole Lotta Love” by Led Zeppelin on Soundcloud:

As we previously have noted, Katy and Greta also recently collaborated by covering a set of punk tunes, publishing the resulting album, Take It, It’s Yours, on Polyvinyl Records over the summer. Perhaps we will hear them tackle Iggy Pop or The Misfits or the Buzzcocks together at the show?

Rock trio Lilac Daze, hailing from Frederick, Maryland, open the show! Tickets are available online.

Greta Morgan released her second album as Springtime Carnivore on Friday, Oct. 7 – and that same day she set upon a US tour with La Sera, hitting more than 20 cities.

The material for the new album, Midnight Room, sprang from a break-up but the songs didn’t take the shape of melancholy heartbreak. Instead, songs like “Face in the Moon” are full of jaunty reflections and wry observations on life and love that feel far more empowering than depressing.

Don’t Miss: La Sera + Springtime Carnivore @ Songbyrd Music House, 10/20/16 [Buzzcocks Edition]

Katy Goodman and Greta Morgan collaborated on a charming album of punk and new wave covers last month, releasing Take It, It’s Yours on August 26 via Polyvinyl Records.

I’ve enjoyed listening to the 10 tracks on the album, which include covers of songs by Billy Idol, Bad Brains, The Replacements, and others. Katy and Greta are bringing their bands, La Sera and Springtime Carnivore respectively, around to perform at Songbyrd Music House on Thursday, Oct. 20 as part of a US tour they have undertaken together.

Both La Sera and Springtime Carnivore have new material so I don’t know if Katy and Greta will perform any of their covers together. However, I’m reminded of their wonderfully dreamy version of “Ever Fallen in Love” by the Buzzcocks, because the Buzzcocks are coming around on their 40th anniversary tour to play at the 9:30 Club next week on Wednesday, Sept. 28!

Watch the official music video for “Ever Fallen in Love” with Katy and Greta covering the Buzzcocks on YouTube:

I shared the Buzzcocks original (which lacks an official video) yesterday because Parklife DC is giving away a pair of tickets to see the Buzzcocks!

You can enter to win by leaving a comment on that blog!

You also can buy tickets to see the Buzzcocks online.

La Sera and Springtime Carnivore have both toured through DC recently, and both bands play dreamy, psych-folk songs for meditators and dancers alike. So it seems only natural that the two bands, fronted by Katy Goodman and Greta Morgan respectively, would tour together!

Well, touring they are but they have gone a step further as Katy and Greta are releasing a collaborative record — Take It, It’s Yours — a surprising collection of covers of New Wave and punk tunes on August 26 via Polyvinyl Records.

Music Park: La Sera @ 9:30 Club — 5/12/16

La Sera 04Katy Goodman of La Sera @ 9:30 Club, 5/12/16

La Sera kept the night alive on May 12th, as they opened for the punk-laden Titus Andronicus, a late counterpoint to the early Parquet Courts show at the 9:30 Club.

Each decked out in matching ‘uniforms’ (white tees and black jeans), La Sera played a poppy, breezy 13-song set for the expectant hordes. That the horde was there for loud, unrepentant punk rock was obvious, but still La Sera won the crowd over (or me) with Katy Goodman’s vocal stylings and an at times twangy, surf-like rock sound.

The indie rock band, La Sera, comes to the 9:30 Club on May 12th, opening for the heavy rockers, Titus Andronicus. This will be a late show after the Parquet Courts performance.

La Sera, currently based in Los Angeles, is Katy Goodman (lead vocals) and husband, Todd Wisenbaker. Katy (formerly of Vivian Girls) formed the band in 2010.

They are touring for their fourth studio album, Music for Listening Music To, which was released in March of this year and produced by Ryan Adams.

Songs like “I Need an Angel” and “High Notes” are upbeat little ditties with a back beat that gets your head nodding along. “High Notes” even goes twangy and Katy claims that she “can’t sing it for you just the way you want me to” as she says goodbye. Katy’s vocals are often subdued, and almost reminds me of a quieter Neko Case.
