The next OutdoorFest Mappy Hour will wrestle with the theme of topographic map reading. An essential skill for hikers and backpackers! REI outdoor instructors will be on hand to give guidance on how to read your map effectively and not get lost.

Mappy Hour is free to attend (with registration). Expect happy hour prices for your beers from the newly re-opened Wunder Garten (at its new location). In addition to German beers, they have expanded their beer menu to include a few local beers.

Come with maps and plans of the places you want to explore.

DC’s Mappy Hour, put on by OutdoorFest, recently got a face lift (no pun intended), from their partnership with The North Face in Georgetown.

With a new attitude and the new partnership (this will be the third Mappy Hour with The North Face) the event has grown into an even more interesting social exercise.

This month’s Mappy Hour will feature a fitness competition (people will be split into teams), including a .8 mile run to Theodore Roosevelt Island and back. Afterwards, there will be a chat led by The North Face athletes and free beer! Learn more and register here.

Parking is free, and they have also partnered with Lyft to help get you to The North Face between 6-10pm. See the code to use when you register.

Don’t Miss: The Second Mappy Hour @ Meridan Pint, 3/2/15

This is the outdoors

The second Mappy Hour is happening this Monday, March 2nd at Meridian Pint.

From the email ‘After a huge launch event (over 120 people) at Penn Social we’re bringing back Mappy Hour to a more intimate location in a private room at Meridian Pint. Join us to hear from OutdoorFest Founder Sarah Knapp on the long-term vision of this outdoor community in D.C. Join this new outdoor enthusiast community with maps, adventure planning and beer.’

Having attended the first Mappy Hour in late January, it proved to be a good opportunity to chat with fellow hikers and meet other outdoor enthusiasts. People shared their expertise and asked others about topics they were interested in, but there was no specific structure.

Moving to Meridian Pint means the event will be a bit smaller in size. Future events will include guest speakers.

Register for the second Mappy Hour here.

Hiking the Appalachian Trail

Do you wish you were hiking at this very moment?

Do you like to pour over maps and plan hikes and adventures?

Would to you like to find others in DC with the same passion for the outdoors?

Come check out the first ‘Mappy Hour’, hosted by OutdoorFest, on Thursday, January 29th at Penn Social.

OutdoorFest is a community of outdoor enthusiasts formed in New York City.

Since early 2014, OutdoorFest has hosted monthly Mappy Hours in New York for ‘outdoor enthusiasts to come together and share their passion for adventure, offer insider info on trip locations, trade books/maps, and be inspired’.

Now they are expanding Mappy Hour to DC.

Sarah Knapp, founder of OutdoorFest, explains:

ParkLife DC: Do you envision this being a monthly event like New York?

Sarah: “Absolutely, one of the most important factors to the success of Mappy Hour in NYC is it’s consistency. We’re not looking to just educate or entertain but also create a long term outdoor enthusiast community.”

ParkLife DC: Is someone from your team coming to DC to host this or is someone volunteering from DC?

Sarah: “While I will be traveling to DC for the first Mappy Hour – the real organization is coming from Jesi and Lauren – both DC area based. They both reached out to me because they heard about Mappy Hour NYC and were interested in bringing it to DC. Without either of them this wouldn’t be happening.”
