Around Town: ShamrockFest 2016 @ RFK Stadium Festival Grounds — 3/12/16 (Part 1)

ShamrockFest 2016ShamrockFest goes green

What is ShamrockFest? Held every year at the RFK Stadium Festival Grounds (aka the parking lot), it presents an interesting enigma.

If you take your cue from the revelers that attend every year (now 17 editions strong!), then you can easily look around and say it is about having fun with friends and letting go of inhibitions.

It is about dressing up in bright green, with shamrock logos, kilts or skimpy outfits. It is about basking in the waves of sounds, with fiddles, horns, guitars and drums. It is about dancing. It is about loitering with friends and enjoying yourself. It is about helping those said friends stand when they had just a wee bit too much… It is about hoisting a pint and saluting those about to rock. It is many things and more.

2016 was my 4th foray into the odyssey that is ShamrockFest (including three of the last five years).

Don’t Miss: Firefly Music Festival @ The Woodlands of Dover International Speedway, 6/18-6/21/15

The Firefly Music Festival is returning for its fourth year to The Woodlands of Dover International Speedway in Dover, Del., for a long weekend of Thursday, June 18 to Sunday, June 21.

Festival ticket sales are underway, and early bird tickets already have sold out. Currently, music lovers can purchase $299 festival passes for the entire weekend or VIP packages at higher rates.

But the festival will not offer single-day passes this year, as it anticipates selling out its capacity of 90,000 attendees with full weekend passes, Red Frog Events, the organizer of the festival, announced Wednesday.

“We’ve seen an unprecedented increase each year since Firefly’s inaugural 2012 festival derived from our success in multiple areas,” said Greg Bostrom, director of Firefly Music Festival, in a press release. “This, in turn, eliminated our ability to offer single day general admission passes in 2015 as we plan to welcome 90,000 attendees, which will bring us to capacity this year.”

Headliners for the festival this year include the legendary Paul McCartney, who will close out Friday night. Kings of Leon headline Saturday night and the Killers close out the festival on Sunday. On Thursday, indie pop movers and shakers like Chari XCX and the Kooks are set to appear.

The 2015 lineup also includes Morrissey, Snoop Dogg, Foster the People, Bastille, Modest Mouse, Zedd, Hozier, Empire of the Sun, Kid Cudi and nearly 100 additional acts performing across seven stages, according to Red Frog.

Once the festival sells out of four-day passes at the general admission price of $299, it may offer “Encore” passes at $329.

Tickets are available online, and a payment plan is available for those who purchase before March 31. For more information, visit http://www.FireflyFestival.com.

St. Patrick’s Day. Your day to revel in overambitious imbibery while flashing green.

After you’ve had your fun tonight, keep the party going into the weekend.

This Saturday, March 21, celebrate the 15th annual ShamrockFest held at the RFK Stadium Festival Grounds (aka outside the stadium). Tickets are available.

Along with Irish and Celtic themed live music (almost 30 bands and DJs on five stages), expect to find plenty of food and beer options, contests, games, Irish performers, and an Irish market.

This year, notable bands include ShamrockFest stalwarts like Scythian and Carbon Leaf, as well as Gaelic Storm and for the first time, Blues Traveler. Local bands include the aforementioned Scythian, Turtle Recall, The Fighting Jamesons (Virginia Beach) and Gaelic Mishap (Baltimore).

From the press release: “As the largest St. Patrick’s Day festival in the United States, we’re excited to deliver yet another memorable day for all those looking to celebrate the Irish holiday,” says ShamrockFest Director Amanda Hogue. “ShamrockFest has been a staple in the DC-area for over a decade and our team has been working hard to improve efficiencies and plans to provide an unforgettable 2015 experience.”

This year, Red Frog Events (who also produce the Firefly Music Festival, Warrior Dash and the American Beer Classic) hosts the festival for the first time since acquiring ShamrockFest from DC’s GoCity Events late last year.

Come out and flash your green!
