Around Town: DC REI Flagship Grand Opening Block Party, 10/21-10/23/16

REI Block Party

If you don’t know by now that REI will finally open its first store in NoMa this October, I’ll happily fill you in.

But you know, so this is just a reminder to mark your calendars for the grand opening taking place over the weekend of October 21-23.

Starting on Friday, October 21st at 10am there will be activities and music and classes and free food and a beer garden and plenty more.

Music includes a Beatles cover band, DJs (including Biz Markie on Sat. at 3pm), live bluegrass and Americana.

The first 500 people who enter each day will win a DC Camelbak bottle with a gift certificate.

REI’s latest flagship store is transforming the former Uline Arena into a mecca of outdoor gear and goodness. There will also be a La Colombe inside, which will be the third location in DC for this coffee shop.

For you outdoor enthusiasts, REI has also been hosting 100 days of events called United Outside leading up to the opening. There are still a few left, though many are full, you can request to be put on the wait list. Find the remaining events here.

DC Adventure Film Festival

On Friday and Saturday (September 9-10) the 2nd Annual DC Adventure Film Festival returns to DC at the Navy Heritage Center’s Burke Theater. The film festival is presented by REI.

There are 29 films being screened in total, ranging from 3 minutes to 54 minutes. Each film highlights people experiencing nature (whether mountains or the sea) and man-made landscapes.

You can buy tickets for each of the six program blocks. (Each day from 5:30-6:30pm, 7:30-9:30pm and 10:00-11:00pm)

Plan out which films to watch with the full schedule and descriptions here.

A few films that look especially interesting include; Flashes of the Altai (three friends traverse remote Mongolia via mountain bike and packraft), The Lost Valley of the Merced (the Merced River in Yosemite NP is one of the forbidden fruits of kayakers), Offseason (Daniel Norris, pitcher for the Detroit Tigers, lives in his van in the offseason, exploring the West), Paddle for the North (six friends paddle remote northern rivers, bringing light to its value) and ZION (see Zion National Park in all its glory).

Additional activities (including on Sunday, September 11) will be available during the day, including speakers, workshops, a free IMAX viewing of 3D Adventure in the Parks, REI Outdoor School and races. See the details here.

Mappy Hour is free to attend (with registration). Expect happy hour prices for your beers from the newly re-opened Wunder Garten (at its new location). In addition to German beers, they have expanded their beer menu to include a few local beers.

Come with maps and plans of the places you want to explore.

Around Town: REI Classes @ Wunder Garten

REI Classes at Wunder Garten

As you’ve no doubt heard many times before, REI is building a flagship store at the former Uline Arena in NoMa. That remains exciting news.

Less exciting is, the store is not set to open until the Fall of 2016. Well, drat.

Fear not, because REI has been partnering with the Wunder Garten beer garden to offer up classes on a range of topics.

For the remainder of August, REI will host (mostly) free classes at the REI Community Space at Wunder Garten (NoMa).

The topics are as diverse as your interests. From running to bike repairs to backpacking to yoga to camping, they basically run the gamut on outdoor activities. They even have a Pub Trivia night scheduled for August 20th.

The REI Community Space is mere steps away from the beer garden itself, so you can grab a pint, pick up something from the daily food truck option and enjoy the class.

I have attended one class (Backpacking in the Appalachians on August 5th), which was informative, with lots of practical tips. I found it helpful as it sparked ideas on what gear I needed and what tasks were needed when planning your own backpacking trip. Thumbs up.

Have a look at the offerings for the rest of August and sign-up!
