Northern Irish post-punk trio Two Door Cinema Club keep upping the ante with a very good third album, Gameshow, released last month via Glassnote Records in the United States.

Since dancing into our ears with their debut album Tourist History in 2010, Alex Trimble (vocals, rhythm guitar, beats, synths), Sam Halliday (lead guitar, backing vocals), and Kevin Baird (bass, synths, backing vocals) have managed to totally sound like themselves while also keeping it interesting. With Gameshow, Alex told NME, “The two biggest influences for me were Prince and Bowie — both total pioneers who straddled that line between out-there pop and avant garde craziness.”

Well, that’s great inspiration all around indeed! Over the summer, Two Door Cinema club released the first single from the new album — “Are We Ready? (Wreck).”

Watch the very amusing official music video for “Are We Ready? (Wreck)” by Two Door Cinema Club, which sends up advertising and consumerism, on You Tube:

Prior to the new album’s release, Two Door Cinema Club played a very sold-out show at the Black Cat in June. Now, they are returning to DC to perform in a bigger space with Echostage on Thursday, Nov. 17, and Parklife DC is giving you a chance to win a pair of tickets to see them! To win, simply leave a comment on this blog. You can leave any comment but perhaps tell us your favorite song by Two Door Cinema Club!

For the rules of this giveaway–

Comments will be closed at 5pm on Thursday, and a winner will be randomly selected. The winner will be notified by email. The winner must respond to our email within 24 hours, or they will forfeit their tickets and we will pick another winner. We will email you instructions on claiming your ticket. Good luck!

If you don’t win, tickets also are available online.

Oh wait — before we go, did we tell you that Broods — the incredibly talented siblings from New Zealand — are opening for Two Door Cinema Club? The trip hop duo recently played their *own* sold-out show at the 9:30 Club on August 1! (Read our Parklife DC review of that show.) It’s almost a question of who would you rather see — Two Door Cinema Club or Broods? Well, why not see them both?

Music Park: Firefly 2016 Music Overview (Day 1 & 2)

Of Monsters and Men - FireflyNanna Bryndís Hilmarsdóttir from Of Monsters and Men (Photo courtesy of Firefly Music Festival)

Firefly 2016. The fifth annual version of the music festival that takes over Dover, Delaware for four days in June, had a solid number of good bands and artists to choose from. The headliners were not as strong as previous years (I still like the first year’s headliners the best). I spent a majority of the time bouncing between one stage or another, eventually catching 30 full sets and another seven half sets.

Day 1 was more about logistics, traveling to Delaware, picking up my credentials (long line!), parking and finding the press tent, but I arrived in time to see a few acts.

Music Park: Bayonne @ Black Cat — 6/7/16

Bayonne 03
Bayonne performs at the Black Cat on Tuesday, June 7, 2016.

Austin-based electronic musician Bayonne stopped by the Black Cat Tuesday to open for Two Door Cinema Club. With vocals, synths, and drums, he proved really quite absorbing and well worth seeing!

A good deal of the crowd showed up to see Bayonne in the sold-out show. And Bayonne (born Roger Sellers) did not disappoint. He threw himself across his synthesizers, bounded around his drums, and sang intensely into his mic while performing some songs from his debut album, Primitives (released in March via Mom+Pop), and improvising some affecting synth and drum numbers.

Don’t Miss: Bayonne @ Black Cat, 6/7/16

Bayonne (born Roger Sellers) is an intriguing musician from Austin, Texas, who plays synths and drum while singing Americana-tinged ambient pop.

The man is certainly a unique performer, and tonight, he opens for Two Door Cinema Club in a sold-out show at the Black Cat!

Yes, the show is far sold out (some tickets released yesterday went fast!), but if you’ve already got your ticket, show up early for Bayonne.

Bayonne released his debut album, Primitives, on Mom+Pop on March 25, and he’s been touring to promote it. It features very catchy, melodic tunes like “Appeals,” which draw you in with its rhythm and intensity. It’s a song about a failure to launch, and the music and lyrics melt together perfectly.

Watch the official music video for “Appeals” by Bayonne on YouTube:

Interestingly, Bayonne is a big admirer of Phil Collins — and I can kind of see the influence actually.

Show up early and catch Bayonne if you’re going to the Black Cat tonight! The show is sold out.
