The 16th Annual National Book Festival comes to the Washington Convention Center on Saturday, September 24th!

Stephen King will be there on the Main Stage! Other authors speaking/presenting include Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Shonda Rhimes, Bob Woodward and Salman Rushdie. Tickets are required for Stephen’s talk (although they are full now), but not the others.

If you like books (and who doesn’t?), there will be a bit of everything. From kids books to fiction to graphic novels to poetry to books on food or history or science, you should have no problem finding something you want to read or to give as a gift.

Over 135 authors and illustrators will be available for signings throughout the day. Check out the schedule here.

A few notable authors and their latest books include, Mary Roach (Grunt) (1:00-1:45pm), Ken Burns (Grover Cleveland, Again!) (1:30-2:30pm) and Justin Cronin (The City of Mirrors) (4:30-5:30pm).

Don’t Miss: DC On Tap Beer Festival @ Washington Convention Center, 5/21/16

Beer

If the opportunity to indulge in three hours of unadulterated beer tasting is presented to you, will you seize it?

This Saturday, May 21st, is the DC On Tap Beer Festival (part of a larger craft beer festival series put on by American On Tap across the country).

Seize the opportunity! You can sample over a 150 beers from more than 80 different breweries, including DC breweries like 3 Stars, Handsome Beer and Atlas Brew Works.

This week (May 16-22) is also American Craft Beer Week, so it is extra apropos that you go.

There will also be food for purchase, live music and a few vendors to peek at while you steel yourself for the next rounds of beer.

Just to whet your appetite a bit, here are just a few of the beers I’ll be targeting:

  • Maine Brewing Company – Mean Old Tom (a mean, old stout with hints of vanilla)
  • Caboose Brewing Company – Saison (they opened in VA about a year ago, and I haven’t tried any of their beers yet)
  • Brewer’s Art – Zeke’s Coffee Porter (should wake me up!)
  • Handsome Beer Company – Strange Charm (a brown ale with a Belgian twist from the newest DC-based brewery – they rent space from other breweries for now)

It may be summer, but I still like them dark.

2015 National Book Festival Poster

This Saturday, September 5th, you can check out the 15th annual Library of Congress National Book Festival. Held this year at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center.

It’s free to attend. This is the second year they’ve held it indoors at the Convention Center (while the renovation continues on The Mall).

This year’s theme is “I Cannot Live Without Books.” It is a quote from Thomas Jefferson, and a reference to the 200th anniversary of the Library’s acquisition of his personal library.

There will be over 170 authors, poets and illustrators featured throughout the day.

Here’s the schedule.

Find the Map and additional info here.

There is also an National Book Festival app available to help customize your personal itinerary for the day.
