The next OutdoorFest Mappy Hour will wrestle with the theme of topographic map reading. An essential skill for hikers and backpackers! REI outdoor instructors will be on hand to give guidance on how to read your map effectively and not get lost.

Mappy Hour is free to attend (with registration). Expect happy hour prices for your beers from the newly re-opened Wunder Garten (at its new location). In addition to German beers, they have expanded their beer menu to include a few local beers.

Come with maps and plans of the places you want to explore.

Register here.

Around Town: REI Classes @ Wunder Garten

REI Classes at Wunder Garten

As you’ve no doubt heard many times before, REI is building a flagship store at the former Uline Arena in NoMa. That remains exciting news.

Less exciting is, the store is not set to open until the Fall of 2016. Well, drat.

Fear not, because REI has been partnering with the Wunder Garten beer garden to offer up classes on a range of topics.

For the remainder of August, REI will host (mostly) free classes at the REI Community Space at Wunder Garten (NoMa).

The topics are as diverse as your interests. From running to bike repairs to backpacking to yoga to camping, they basically run the gamut on outdoor activities. They even have a Pub Trivia night scheduled for August 20th.

The REI Community Space is mere steps away from the beer garden itself, so you can grab a pint, pick up something from the daily food truck option and enjoy the class.

I have attended one class (Backpacking in the Appalachians on August 5th), which was informative, with lots of practical tips. I found it helpful as it sparked ideas on what gear I needed and what tasks were needed when planning your own backpacking trip. Thumbs up.

Have a look at the offerings for the rest of August and sign-up!

Grapevine: Wunder Garten, a Pop-Up Beer Garden Coming to NoMa in April 2015

Beer sampler
Looks like the large vacant lot at 150 M Street, NE, in NoMa next to the future home of REI, is turning into a pop-up beer garden and park this spring, called Wunder Garten.

The owner hopes to open in mid-April, but the long-term future of the beer garden is still an open question.

District Cuisine reported:

‘Business partners, including the owner of L’Enfant Cafe in Adams Morgan, are planning a hybrid beer garden and park that will cater to guests of all ages (and will likely allow dogs as well). The fenced in lot will be leveled and landscaped in a way that maintains a large open area for recreational activities. The partners in Wunder Garten are working closely with the NoMa Business Improvement District on the design to maximize the park area as NoMa currently has a deficit of parks. There will be beer benches like one would find in a German beer garden and a significant portion of the space will have a tent over it for rain. They will have multiple beers on tap at the bar they will build on site that will mostly be German and Austrian, but they do plan on having a few local microbrews as well. The space will not have a kitchen (the nearby Harris Teeter that is technically on the same land restricts what kinds of food can be sold in the space); however, there will be 2-3 food trucks in the space that will rotate. High end portable restrooms will be available for customers. In all, the space will be designed to fit 200-300 people inside.

Wunder Garten will be open weekdays from early afternoon through 10 pm and on weekends from noon through midnight.’
