Most folks likely most recently saw Erykah Badu in the comedy “What Men Want,” but the R&B artist is touring her music, and she stops at The Anthem on Saturday, March 16.
Erykah’s last musical effort was in 2015, when she surprised with the release of a mixtape called But You Caint Use My Phone. A press release said of the 11-track album, “The mixtape expertly weaves Erykah Badu’s trademark soulful vocals with psychedelic soundscapes, hip-hop-inflected beats, smooth R&B, jazz, art-rock and found sounds into a new genre Erykah describes as TRap & B.”
Last year, Erykah dropped by NPR’s Tiny Desk Concert to perform “Rimshot” and “Green Eyes.” Watch the video on YouTube:
In a review for Pitchfork, Ryan Dombal praised Erykah’s musical sensibilities and statelessness.
“But You Caint Use My Phone is a mixtape in the true hip-hop sense, as it largely finds Badu putting her spin on other artists’ songs. Created alongside a young producer and fellow Dallas denizen named Zach Witness in just 12 days, the tape feels off-the-cuff, yet also steeped in history and wisdom. This paradoxical quality can be found in much of Badu’s work over the last two decades as well as on her initial inspiration for this tape, Drake’s ‘Hotline Bling,'” Ryan wrote.
