GRAMMY-nominated bands Della Mae and Sister Sadie are teaming up for a night of great bluegrass music at The Birchmere on Sunday, Nov. 20.
These two bands of incredibly talented women feature nine phenomenal award-winning instrumentalists and singers, who will create a rare and exciting night of music.
Della Mae spoke recently about the challenges of being a progressive, all-woman band in a male-dominated genre in this piece for The Guardian, which named them “the most influential all-women band in bluegrass.”
Della Mae band founder Kimber Ludiker (fiddle) and Avril Smith (guitar) are DMV locals! Their band’s mission is to showcase top female musicians and to improve opportunities for women and girls through advocacy, mentorship, programming, and performance.

As for Sister Sadie, the International Bluegrass Music Association can’t stop piling awards on the band! Sister Sadie collectively has been recognized with the association awards of Entertainer of the Year, Vocal Group of the Year (3x!), Fiddle Player of the Year (only the second woman to win that distinction), and Vocalist of the Year. Alison Krauss called Sister Sadie “the best women bluegrass music has ever claimed.”
