Citizen Cope, born Clarence Greenwood, dropped by 9:30 Club in the city he grew up in to perform a selection of favorites and a few unreleased songs on his All The Songs You Want to Hear Tour recently.

On May 10, Citizen Cope visited 9:30 Club to share songs from across his career in a solo acoustic performance. Prior to launching his tour, he also shared a new song, “Ms Prado,” which may appear on his upcoming album, The Victory March.

It’s been a busy period for Citizen Cope, who released Heroin and Helicopters in 2019 and The Pull of Niagara Falls in 2021. Citizen Cope will release The Victory March this summer via his own label, Rainwater Recordings.

Explaining the new album’s title, Cope said he sees the record as one about finding connection amidst chaos: “I wanted to celebrate the gift of life and of knowledge. You get on the road and you see how disconnected people are. There’s a lot of discontent out there — in most cases, rightfully so. People feel like they’re not a part of something. We’re just thrown into a pit against each other over commerce, more financial and economic differences than actual human differences, and we get confused… I felt like writing something positive, with more of a hopeful slant.”

Citizen Cope fans may recall Clarence spent his teen years in DC, graduating from Wilson High School (now Jackson-Reed High School) in Tenleytown in 1986.
