In 1993, The Breeders burned through FM radio with their sophomore album, Last Splash. The band fitfully fell apart afterward, but now they are back. First order of business: Celebrate 30 years of that breakthrough album.
And celebrate The Breeders did recently at The Fillmore Silver Spring, the day before they reissued Last Splash (30th Anniversary Original Analog Edition). Katherine Gaines was there to photograph the show.
At The Fillmore Silver Spring on Sept. 21, The Breeders presented Last Splash in its entirety, dedicating 14 numbers of the 21-song set to the album. The Breeders opened with “New Year” and ended their main set with “Roi (Reprise).” The hugely popular and ready singalong “Cannonball” appeared as the second song of the night.

For their encores, The Breeders pulled the rest of the show from debut album Pod (1990) — “When I Was a Painter” and “Iris” — and comeback record All Nerve (2018) — “Wait in the Car,” “Nervous Mary,” and “Walking With a Killer.” The band also performed the title track to their 1992 EP, Safari.
Concert goers delighted in the return to stage of sisters Kim and Kelley Deal, who exhibited the sort of stage chemistry that only musical siblings can capture. Bassist Josephine Wiggs and drummer Jim Macpherson also returned to the fold, and it seemed perhaps The Breeders finally arrived to collect their due.
The Breeders continue on a headline tour through October, and then go they go on to support the Foo Fighters and Olivia Rodrigo in separate stints. It’s a well-earned victory lap for the quartet.
