Beloved alt-country singer-songwriter (and one of my personal favorites) Lydia Loveless plays DC’s intimate The Atlantis on Monday, Dec. 4. A critical favorite since emerging roughly a decade ago, AllMusic describes them as a “perfect mix of country twang and rock & roll attitude, with great songs to match.”
This September, they released her latest album, Nothing’s Gonna Stand In My Way Again, to gushing critical praise. Pitchfork calls the album their”latest and best,” and Bandcamp Daily says, “Loveless expands their musical palette—songs like the radiant ‘Poor Boy’ have more in common with ‘80s paisley pop than country music—and delivers it all with an effortlessness that even excellent past efforts have lacked.”
“It’s definitely the proudest I’ve ever been of something I’ve made,“ Loveless says. Sound Opinion writes, “Loveless has become one of the finest songwriters working today, a fully formed artist who keeps outdoing their previous work with each album.”

This past spring, Loveless opened for the Drive-By Truckers, who they cite, along with the Pretenders, as one of the key influences on their latest album, in their two-night stand at the 9:30 Club with a dynamite set that thrilled and delighted the crowd. Their show at the Atlantis is their first headlining appearance in DC and some time. It’s sure to be a great night with terrific, heartstopping songs and punk rock energy.
